    Beautifully written.

I was thinking about this just this morning...as I do every morning. Why? Because the closet doors by my bed are mirrored. Then, when I open the shower door there's my wife's bathroom mirror staring back at me. There's no escape. Every morning it's right in my face. If I didn't love food so much I'd really have something...

I agree with the part about human weight being controlled by calories in minus calories out. I wonder, though, why the control loop causes almost people to desire to eat roughly the same as they exercise, give or take. If it were just about personal discipline, I would expect wider variation, where people consume thousands of calories more than they burn and therefore shoot up in weight rapidly. This makes me think people have a slightly different set point or control loop that given the same food options leads to different weights.

The article also talks about how excess weight is associated with all kinds of diseases. This is true, but I wonder to what extent it's causal.

Ms. Grossman offers this simplistic narrative: "Excess weight and obesity lead to pain: physical pain, in terms of an almost endless list of related ailments, and emotional pain and financial pain coming from all those doctor’s bills."
I suspect there are elements of truth to it, but it's far from that simple.

I said, "All I ask of my body is that it carry my brain around."
And she said, "How long is it going to be able to do that if you don't work out?"
