Part of our problem as a nation is our Christian underpinnings. When you make suffering a noble action, and encourage poverty and parasitical behaviour as being somehow morally superior to being wealthy, you set the stage for all manner of demagogues to pander to the lowest common denominators, to the disenfranchised, the lazy, the resentful and envious....as a nation, we were sown with the seeds of our own destruction from day one. But you will never hear a Christian concede the contradictions to liberty and free markets in their doctrine. Combine our religiosity with the innate tendency in our species to use emotionality rather than rationality in decision making, and it should be no surprise the direction we are headed. In fact, considering the history of our species on this planet, it is a minor miracle that the Enlightenment or the birth of America ever happened.

History is filled with examples of hubristic societies that failed as a result of parasites.

Especially when that society makes it morally superior to be a parasite.
