I think parents should spend some time with their kids talking about the weapon of social media-you need to be trained. I'm not sure an arrest seemed necessary-but kids easily forget what they say in social media is out there and affects their reputation or could do harm. there are a lot of hard lessons learned with the headiness of I'm talking to the world about myself and about you

Actually, proper morality and ethics are all that is needed. I don't have to tell my kids not to do such a thing - they never would even think to do something like this. Nor would they shout "Fire" in a crowded theatre. Their ethical foundation wouldn't even give them the framework to think of doing such a thing.

well in her specific case...but I do think other mistakes can be made even with morality and ethical upbringing. c'mon. as a teen you never made a mistake? think of your mistakes as a teen. now add social media.

There are mistakes, there's stupidity, and there's immorality/unethical. Morality/ethics will prevent much of the first and even some of the second.

yes, and even so, youngsters can screw up. My worst offences were usually directed at myself. but I certainly know plenty of upstanding individuals who pulled donuts in peoples' yards, tped houses, egged storefronts as kids. I think in their case, parents held them accountable.

I'd put those in the "stupid" category. But texting something that is tantamount to a threat to an airline? That's beyond stupid, verging on sociopathic.

You are correct Robbie about the context of a threat to an airline, beyond stupidity. Any threat of any kind is stupid. But I stand with khalling about kids. Kids are so desensitized with regard to social media. Even the "good" ones must be taught the application of reason and ethics in daily life. I have a 20 year old and an 18 year old. Had to learn this lesson myself.

I don't have much reason to believe her parents are aware or involved.....the apple/tree scenario is usually true (although not always). The parents are probably pointing fingers everywhere but at themselves...

probably. and I would say in this case, I'd be having her checked out for sociopathy- who knows how other countries have painted the US and groomed their children as well...and having seen how our changes and TSA after 9/11 affected how everyone else had to do things. maybe their own govt bears some responsibility for how 14 year olds see US companies in the world...

Bet she doesn't do that again. I'm surprised AA replied giving her a head's up. Her excuses were lovely though. "I'm just a girl"...I think she forgot the word 'dumb'. (and she blamed it on her friend too.) A lesson in responsibility of using devices and being a big mouth for no good reason. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, honey.

Well, she is from Holland, so maybe the laws are different there(?)

As for ignorance of laws, I'll have to admit that I'm very ignorant of many. How can any one person be cognizant of all of them, plus all the regulations that serve the same purpose as law and get you in trouble just as fast? I say that anymore, ignorance of a law IS an excuse.
