I like it. It is what it is...music that's easy on the ears. I, like a couple here, also used to be an active musician: guitar and vocals. Nowadays, as some here have mentioned, almost all the studio vocals are autotuned. I'm even hearing it in country music (obvious pitch manipulation) and I just go "ugh!"

Many moons ago I performed all over California in a band. Closest popular example of what I was doing would be similar to Sammy Hagar. Not for everybody...but very therapeutic. I miss it.

I did a whole wedding reception, as the music source --
as a DJ -- using nothing but Nat and Natalie Cole.
    it was glorious! -- j

as someone living with perfect (relative) pitch, I was
not aware of the huge corrections which are being
used these days. . Thank You! -- j

p.s. I will shortly have recordings of both versions
of the example song. . ipecac for the ears.

Right, Herb. there are so many talented people who don't make it big. Years ago I made frequent business trips to NYC Manhattan and always took my Aunt out to her favorite neighborhood clubs (upper west side.) The talent of people who were not working was amazing. There were often as many as a dozen fantasic singers that performed live (without enhancement) for free each night, just to hone their performances and be audtion ready.
On one visit, one of the salesman in our Manhattan software office was expecting a child and we donated for a baby gift.
Today that baby is known as ... drumroll ...
    Lady Gaga.

    Good Grief! That was horrid.
How in the world did she ever get a gig? No wonder she never sang in person but only mouthed the songs. I know at least a half dozen singers just here in the Tampa area who can sing in perfect pich without any accompaniment and have beautiful voices.
    Ugh!!!!!

I did, too. . no luck.

55 years ago, there was an artist named Ronnie Dayton
who sang as Ronnie and the Daytonas, using sound-on-sound
tape to make him a "group." . this is not the Ronny and
the Daytonas who made it big. . he had a "hit" which I loved
called "snow queen." . I have the 45. . we have much more
tech now, including a thing which I have here called the
"voiceLive Touch by tc.helicon" which will do some
crazy things. . I also have a friend who uses a box
in live performances to make a backup band appear
behind him, in tune and in time ... James Rogers,
who works with Dolly Parton. . there are amazing
    things out there! -- j

Here is an article on auto-tune and a sample of Britney Spears without using auto-tune. Pretty revealing.
    http://www.theverge.com/2014/7/9/5884...

Madonna frequently used lip-synch tracks for her shows. No one can sing well while performing the insane dance moves that Madonna (and others) do to entertain the crowd.
Anyone who attends a concert with 50,000 other people can expect not to hear a live performance. Why bother going to a concert to see something from 100-300 yards away and not hear their voice live at all? Give me an intimate club venue every time.

Hmmm. I never thought about voice enhancement.
I guess that tells you how out of touch I am since I was a musician.

Sounds like 99.99% of all popular songs of the 21st century. Yecchh!
Can't tell about the voice itself since so many "artists" have their recorded voices pitch/tone/amplitude/special-effects "corrected" using software. I looked for other music by the artist on youtube without success.

When I was a musician in a touring professional band, I realized how lucky I was to be working. As to singers, for every one you know of, there are probably 100 or more, just as good or better that never will make it big. What you see and hear likely represents less than 5% of the capable artists that you'll never hear of.

I was looking for a good "backbeat" song and ran across
this ... Chuck Berry's Rock'n'Roll Music did the trick,
but I have this affinity for the name Dagny....... ! -- j
