An opinion of the libertarian movement by Kevin D. Williamson

Perhaps libertarians do come across as not being cohesive in their beliefs. And yes, unfortunately, there does seem to be a real me, me, me mindset among the majority of people. Not enough objectivists and libertarians to make a difference?

There was a recent Pew Research Center poll that suggested that almost two-thirds of Americans would favor abolishing mandatory minimum sentences for non-violet drug offenses. I think that there is a lot of cost savings to be had if we just opened ourselves up to the idea that if it's not personally effecting you, then it shouldn't be a concern.

I suspect a majority of Americans loves livertarianism, contrary to this article, but they need a slow and cautious approach. We have to phase in modest changes over several years. Most libertarians come off as too radical for me, yet I would accept a moderate libertarian scaling back even programs I like (food stamps, medical assistance for the poor, education / job training) if they also equally scaled back the military, prisons, and things starting with war on [blank].

I actually think the majority would go for this. I could see people saying, "I hate that they are taking away scholarship opportunities from poor children, but at least we're not harassing and jailing their families for non-violent drug offenses."
