The government that starts the smallest ends up being the biggest. It is a natural evolution. The productivity of free people leads to government largess. I don't like it, but it's not up to me.

Interesting to note that The founding Fathers fled England because of high taxation on its people. Yet today, we have all those same taxations, and 18x as many. America WAS a moral nation. Sadly, today those morals are virtually non existent. Its fall began with the assassination of JFK. From that point forward it's America is about military might and imprisoning its people through debt and taxation. I ask you...where lies the pursuit of happiness today? The economical strains have made it difficult to maintain a constant state of happiness in these United States. It's all about money & power. Happiness and the pursuit thereof has been undermined. We need to change and set aside banking institutions, the "credit" they offer us and their loans. It's sole purpose is to partner with the individual making gains at our expense while they get rich, and the small business man struggles. Even if profiting year to year, it's not without struggle and economic imprisonment.

Well, truth be told, most colonists weren't fleeing taxation. I'm sure it played some role, but certainly not a primary reason. And really, most taxes in the mid 18th century weren't even being enforced. It was the lack of representation that was the killer. If the king had added representation for the colonies to the houses of lords and commons, we would likely be flying the Union Jack now.

I find it hilarious that we pay half of everything we earn to the government, and then wonder why there are so many poor...

Ah, but Maph, you assume that the burden is pervasive. It is not. Those who pay the majority are a small minority, but those who are receiving are a large plurality. And when you include the bureaucracy, I dare say a majority.
