I sent $100 to Axanar, so I am invested in this.

I earn a significant portion of my income from independent work that is copyrighted. I earn the bulk of my income from "work for hire" that is copyrighted to others. I have a horse in this race.

One time, I was doing some research online and found a great article: just what I was looking for!! Hey, I wrote this. It was taken by Vassar University. I offered to write something original for them, but they just deleted the content and never answered. So, I "get" the argument from the side of a producer. My broad brushstroke is that once you put something out there, you lose control of it. Anyone who saw Henry Ford rolling around Dearborn could be inspired to build their own "horseless carriage."

Property is exclusive. A sunrise is not. Star Trek and Mickey Mouse and a megaton of other creations are far beyond the control of their creators. In the case of Star Trek, in particular, "He's dead, Jim." Have you never seen a bumper sticker that said, "Beam me up, Scottie. There's no intelligent life here." For many years when Paramount controlled Star Trek, they refused to sanction any fanfic-turned-pro that introduced new romantic relationships. They wanted to stop the Kirk-Spock love stories. However, we now have a new Spock-Uhura love story that was not an element of the original franchise.

A specific, excludable work, such as Star Trek: Insurrection or Atlas Shrugged is property. The cultural artifact of the Star Trek "universe" or the slogan "Who is Galt?" is obviously not physically or metaphysically excludable.

Ayn Rand cogently stated that you cannot prevent someone from knowing what they know. By extension, it is clear to me that you cannot prevent someone from acting on their knowledge.
