And with that I lost all illusion that he understands rights or will uphold the Constitution. This entire affair is a naked attempt to overrule the will of the people. It has come up countless times in the last 2 decades or more to give the government various types of backdoors and to limit encryption or make it porous to government. Each and every time it has been defeated. So this administration puts the Justice department up to attempting to order what the people clearly disapprove of.

Apple is doing a very just and righteous thing to say NO to this. That Trump seemingly gets none of this and just advocates mass boycott speaks quite ill of his grasp of such situations.

This nonsense has nothing whatsoever to do with one terrorist phone. This is about access to anything that anyone wishes to keep private.

Notice...we didn't hear about a warrant for that one particular phone, instead they want it all but will not invoke the proper law.

I am sure that Apple would honor a warrant if served for this particular case.

    who will watch the watchers
    who will guard the guards
    when it's time to open
    the long sealed documents
    hard to say but wonder
    where the originals went
    Were they ever there?
It's all a matter of trust
    But the buckets leaking
    Won't hold water
    The Buckets turned to rust.

Is there a candidate currently running actually taking Apple's side on this dispute?

If the FBI managed to fumble around enough to erase the phone, I don't see what they think Apple would be able to do anyway.
