Microsoft starts pushing Windows 10 as a 'recommended' update

"In October, Microsoft execs said the 'reservation' phase of upgrading to Windows 10 had ended. That phase of the upgrade push involved users proactively 'reserving' their free copies of Windows 10 for download. The next phase of the push was to mark Windows 10 as an 'Optional' update in Windows Update for all Windows 7 and 8 customers. After that, Microsoft officials said in early 2016 they'd re-categorize Windows 10 as a 'Recommended' update.

"Officials did concede that users with automatic updates enabled might see the Windows 10 upgrade automatically initiate on their devices..."

"Microsoft is not changing its policy of downloading part of the Windows 10 code proactively to users' machines to make upgrading faster. The company is continuing to do that, in spite of complaints by many."

Not only that, they have released updates for Win7 and 8 that incorporate these same data transfers into them. I would not install them if it were me, I am marking them to hide.

They will just create an updated update. Better to avoid all updates.
I see the fedgov (and other governments) as the biggest threat.
        (1) creating worms in the wild to attack our computers, get control and
        (2) using backdoors via updates from Microsoft, Apple, Google to accomplish the same thing.

I used to use Linux and OS/2 in the 90s. After spending time getting the dual boot and running Windows progs in OS/2 working, I decided I had wasted my time. I switched to Windoze sometime around 1998. I think I'm going back to Linux now. I'll need to keep a machine or two running Windows. Or if I can get dual boot or vertual installs working, I'll do that.

We need a tutorial on virtual machine installation, dual boot, or whatever is the easiest way to keep Windows as a tool for compatability and not the platform where I do Quickbooks, banking, etc.

Off topic question-Would you need quickbooks if you didn't have to file income tax reports, or would you be satisfied with something less onerous and time consuming?

I would still use something like QuickBooks because I can track something through proposal -> hours and expenses on the project -> invoice -> receive check -> check cleared. That's simple if one or two projects are going, but any more than that and it's easy to lose track and get off track on one of those steps.

Income tax forces me to do reports and track a few other things. In a few small ways that's good, but in no way makes a complicated income tax system a good thing.

Oh, there are indeed times when things like quickbooks or any accounting or project management software have value. You just need to be aware of the capabilities and match them to your needs. When they do not match, then it is a good time to question the value.

Actually, we have an appaloosa ranch we run, and we use the "all receipts in a bag" method of accounting. I could never get my wife to be so disciplined as to write it down. Quickbooks is good for a cash record type business, but we sell (when we do) in chunks, so tracking cash is not as big an issue. Little notebooks work too...

I hate tax filing. It reminds me too clearly who is master and who is slave. Nosey, meddling looters.

My mission is always to maximize my efforts in limiting the looting. As long as you stick to the software and guidelines, a lot of it is "interpretation". Our lack of simple documents, and habit of keeping every scrap of paper, would mean one nasty audit. There was a Beverly Hillbilly episode once where Jethro was Jed's representative at an audit, so I decided it was a fitting method for people who otherwise lie, cheat and steal for a living.

I found a good description on the web, I will have to go forth and refind it, it was amazingly easy to use Linux. Since I hope to actually play StarCitizen on my machine, I must suffer the abuse of MS for now. But no reason others should not escape their clutches....
