The author obviously does not understand objectivity or rational selfishness particularly clearly. It appears that the impression of Objectivism is more of a pure egoism. Do what is best for me in the moment, with no regard to what is best for me down the road.

    From the article
"Ultimately, it all comes down to gossip. More than tool-making, art, or even language, gossip is a human universal that is a defining feature of our species (though this could change if we ever learn to translate the complex communication system in whales or dolphins). Gossip is intimately connected with the moral rules of a given society, and individuals gain or lose prestige in their group depending on how well they follow these rules. "

I agree that the conseqences of gossip are a motivating factor, however rational selfishness would have me consider those consequences as part of my reasoning process and as a result I would choose to assist my tribe/clan/family/stranger where I could do so and gain as much from the help I offer as I gave by offering.

Likewise he does not seem to understand the ideal of altruism that requires sacrifice (giving up something better for something not as good) which no one will rationally choose to do.

These premiss from with the author operates are wrong, which simply makes the whole article flow incorrectly and inaccurately in its description of human interrelation.
