Project X - Lightsquared - A directed electromagnetic pulse (EMP)

What exactly would Project X look like?
It looks like a directed EMP to me, but this isn't really my area of expertise.
The owner of Lightsquared is definitely an Orren Boyle for securing massive government contracts for his satellite technology in exchange for Obama campaign cash.
The military is afraid that, if implemented,
Lightsquared's technology could crash helicopters, etc.

I know some about this, but definitely need guidance on this one.

I can't find any reference to Project X related to Lightsquared. Lightsquared is a company that owns the spectrum that butts up against GPS. They also own two satellites that provide cellular/broadband commercially. They propose expanding the terrestrial portion of that system to compete more widely in broadband, but are being stymied by GPS companies, Air Force, and congressional investigations into campaign contributions. Because of those oppositions they've been in Chapter 11 for some time.

Lightsquared wouldn't have called what they were doing Project X. The Air Force complaints are part of what I had heard about. The Air Force was concerned that their signals could be interfered with.

I thought Lightsquared was working on a celluar wireless solution that threatens to interfere with military communications?

I'm no expert on EMP but I'd think any EMP would have to be narrowly focused and have a pretty short useful range.

Your first sentence is what I had heard as well. A directed EMP would have to be very narrowly focused and would have a range of < 1 mile (at least at this point), probably much less than that.
