It's insane to me that people keep trying to look at THG from a left wing perspective, as if wealth being unevenly distributed is the essential factor that determines if something is right or left or not. History has shown that socialist and communist governments hoarded money in the same way the government in THG does.

This is the worst comparison ever. And I'm growing tired of Atlas fans being referred to as young, and immature, and inexperienced at life. The older and more experiences you have the more Atlas makes sense! Then again this dude didn't even finish the book before he "grew up". I give this article two thumbs down and a cyber-smack-upside-the-head.

I actually think THG has more in common with AS than not.

Perhaps they do, but the writer did a piss poor job of it. He didn't address individualism vs collectivism instead he went for the haves vs the have nots. He didn't mention how Peta and Katniss (or as I lovingly refer to them, "Peniss") held onto their beliefs and managed to survive a little better off than the rest because they WORKED FOR IT. (By hunting and selling the meat etc.) He also didn't mention how there was an uprising by district 13 that spread throughout that restored the country, ya know...thanks to all those free thinkers and individuals who kept hold of what was right and didn't give up. He went the way of comparing the arena events with the voting process. In other words he butchered what good have been a pretty good comparison. Which, jml, makes you correct. :)

Are you referring to the first book or the entire trilogy? There are a couple of things to note.

First, the series is about a teenage girl discovering how her world works while being forced to be concerned about her own immediate survival over all else.

Second, the series is focused on the youth of a corrupt system being sent to war.

Third, the third book focuses on the rebellion and contrasting it with the Capital (through the lens of war and manipulation) from Katniss' perspectives.

I don't think Susan Collins is the best writer ever or that the series is absolutely incredible, but is good and enjoyable.

Fryxell's article is not very instructive, considering that he speaks only of relative income percentages, but not the total size of the income pie, without which his thesis is all but meaningless.
