Reality is finally setting in. Putin intends to restore the old USSR in some fashion. We should focus on keeping the old "Eastern Europe" from falling under the Russian boot. I think we can help with that, but I'm not as sanguine about Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.

Mike, I will respectfully disagree. The conflict is old, dating to at least late 17th century, when Ukrainians have been conquered, alternatively, by the Russians and the Poles. But as to not being able to tell them apart, let's picture a scenario where the United States decides to take over Ontario. After all, this would not be the first time and for people on the other side of the globe the differences are not too apparent. In the 20th century, between 7 and 13 million Ukrainians have been murdered by the Soviets (some of whom were themselves Ukrainians) by an artificial famine to destroy the Ukrainian peasants, then millions more through WW II, followed by a half century of subjugation.
On the other hand the US is completely impotent to do anything at all with regard to Russia, thus the administration is better off just shutting up and putting it's tail between it's legs, where it usually is when confronted with anybody who has more will and strength than the American public. Ukrainians, too, are paying the price of their own stupidity - first, they gave up their nuclear arsenal in the 1990's, taking Russia's word that it will "protect them, second, instead of arming everyone in the country with the small arms that are available and turning themselves into Switzerland, their government is calling on those that have arms (very few), to turn them in.

Obama and fair elections - the same could be said. Actually, when was the last election in the US that did not include fraud. It was before JFK. Doesn't matter the party, the Council on Foreign Relations will have what they want, not what the people want. We are all getting swallowed by the UN and those international bankers.

Do you really care? This is a 1000-year conflict between Ukainians and Russians... (If you can tell them apart, please explain it to us.)

Putin + 'Fair Elections" = Oxymoron.

What is important to me is the involvement of the EU and the United States. It seems that both urged the Ukraine to rise up and install a government that would vote to join the EU and possibly NATO. This was a miscalculation on par with Neville Chamberlain. If the EU and the United States back out now they look weak, ineffective and cowardly in the eyes of any group that would rise up and fight for freedom. If they push too far world markets could be adversely affected, a regional war could break out and Russian US relations could be damaged for years to come.

Who cares? Ukrainians? If they cared about LIBERTY and FREEDOM in any objective sense, they would not have been the nation they were since 1991, repressive and regressive. You do not like Russia, so you do not like Putin, so the enemy of Putin becomes your friend...

Ukraine will cease to exist as a nation within two years if Putin gets his way. Large grabs followed by small followed by more until nothing is left. If the provinces bordering Crimea withhold gas and electricity, Russia will grab them saying they are endangering lives of Russians and this cannot be allowed to happen.
Read the history of Czechoslovakia a in 1938. Same thing here.

Doesn't it seem just a tad ridiculous that a group of people in a geographical area are all taking a vote about who gets to own their little area and who they get to pay taxes to? They are essentially voting on who gets to own them. On top of that, these two owners are getting ready to send people to their deaths over the whole thing.

Yes it will. The Crimea vote should go Putins way. The Obama administration and EU still seem confused on what their next move should be.
