    Walmart and other major retailers should decamp everywhere a $15/hr minimum wage is legislated.

    Who broke the deal? Sounds like it was DC Government and the Unions.

    Port Townsend Washington denied Walmart a permit. As a result they built 15 miles to the east and 15 miles to the West. plus a ten mile drive to the main highway. The citizens supported it by abandoning stores in Port Townsend and routinely shopping 25 miles away. This left Safeway and two other super markets and a lot of empty former businesses and one food co-op supported by hippies on welfare.

    Typical smooth move exlax government thinking.

    Bodega, California area has a huge marina owned by the county. After 2008 was to raise rates 50%. They went from 70% occupancy to 30% or less within a few months. They cut corners and let a huge costly haul out facility turn to rust. While stealing most of the income from the marina to use building bicycle paths and oh yes running up county debt. Smooth move exlax.

    DC will get it's $15 minimum. And more doors will close.

    Thank God and Greyhoud for Walmart and the Dollar Stores or you people up in USSA would starve. Odds are high the DC residents will pass that minimum wage and then learn to ride the bus. Crying, whining, and complaining how they were forced to cut their own throats.

    It's interesting how they said they're having trouble making the stores work in a denser urban environment, but Council member Evans explained that behind closed doors they said it was also local min wage, local medical leave rules, and local laws requiring min hours per week. Evan says, "They were saying, ‘How are we going to run the three stores we have, let alone build two more?'". So it sounds like he understands Wal-Mart's position. Then he says, "The optics of this are horrible... [Wal-Mart] can't do that."

    I understand that Wal-Mart made a legal agreement with the city, but their attitude sounds a little like when they were cajoling, threatening, and trying everything to get Galt to produce. You can't do that! Produce! Otherwise you're a "deserter". Work! You almost imagine the slave driver wielding a whip.
