THANKYOU LS. Ive just left this comment on the article...

I see there are some 'really well thought out comments' (look up sarcasm) on here, which will not help us Brits one bit. Taking a person's life is a very big deal. It's not a choice I would make lightly, unlike certain 'fundamentalists' these days. It's funny how this article crops up now because I've had conversations with a few people lately about how life in the UK is getting out of hand. Gun ownership, ie - the increasingly necessary 'right to defend life' has entered a couple of these conversations. I for one think it would be wise if our government repealed the handgun ban. Let's face it, not many people owned handguns when they WERE legal (criminals on the other hand, couldn't care less about the law). I've never owned a gun, nor have my parents, nor did my grandparents. I guess - like the majority of people, none in my family thought it necessary to do so. I think that's changed now - given recent & ever increasing distressing events. I know that's a pretty controversial thing to say & of course I expect to be slammed for it by Progressive Army but I'm sorry, you've done enough damage already, you can shove it! I have young children. Supposing a mad gunman stormed the school that MY children attend? I'd prefer it if adults in the vicinity were able to halt a tragedy before it happens because let's face it, the police always turn up twenty minutes too late. I doubt the majority of the British public would consider using a gun on another human being unless it was absolutely necessary to do so. Of course I realise granting the public 'the right to bear arms' will never be considered by lawmakers in Great Britain, meanwhile our rights are being stripped, against our will by non-elected bureaucrats in Europe, every day. Ps. No, I'm not a BNP supporter.

I don't think you said ANY thing controversial...you're speaking logically. And for the record, we all agree that possibly having to take a person's life, even if they're about to take yours, is a very big deal and not to be taken lightly so I'm a little confused by your first line... the "well thought out" and "sarcasm" bit.. the comments above yours were not sarcastic, they are calling it like they see it...and I agree with what they said.
We in America who choose to carry do so because it is our right to do. Not because we're looking for a fight...just the opposite. Defending your own life is a big serious deal. It's a choice. Do I want to be a victim if someone would choose to try and make me one? No. Some people say, "Oh, what are the odds of that happening?" Probably pretty small, but I don't like to take chances that might end up with me dead...I prefer to be prepared and I take the responsibility that goes along with it very seriously...it's a last resort option. One doesn't just go buy a gun and strap it on and away they go (not a responsible one anyway)...there is training involved. Not just weapons and target training either... but in being aware of your surrounding at all times..always having an exit plan. Noticing who's coming towards you, up behind you...it IS a big deal. Some of us choose preparedness over being a potential victim. Explain the BNP. I just looked it up and what I've read didn't sound so bad, but I'd rather hear your interpretation because you live there. People love to pretend "oh that will never happen"..."or I'll just call the cops"... I see these as being a very false sense of security, but it is their choice....and that's what this whole thing boils down to... being able to make that choice for yourself and not letting someone else have that power.
And I JUST realized this is cut and pasted from your comment that you left on the article's post so disregard my reaction to "your first line" lol

When is it moral to take a life? When it would be immoral not to.

When your life, or someone elses, is being imminently threatened by another. (That answers both questions.)

Dittos! However don't expect the British will be getting their guns back. Don't think the drive is there.

I can't see it happening in a hurry either but things HAVE TO CHANGE. There is much hidden unrest & something has to give soon. If our government continues in it's refusal to listen to the people it is supposed to represent then it is a danger to us. Of course it wants to keep guns out of the peoples' hands. That way, we are no threat to them, have no voice & no power to change things.

Such a change must be done in small incremental steps. Where should the people of England begin?

Well I'm guessing a 'very well thought out government petition' requesting amendment of certain points within the Human Rights Act (GB are possibly to have our own version of HRA in order to guard us against abuses thrust upon us through EU legislation).

In Article 1 of the First Protocol: Protection of Property, paragraph 1. "Every natural or legal person is entitled to the peaceful enjoyment of his possessions. No one shall be deprived of his possessions except in the 'public interest' and 'subject to the conditions provided for by law' and by the general principles of international law."

If 'public interest' can be looked at & if an acknowledgement that in light of recent & increasingly common distressing occurrences, the 'public interest' is no longer being served, that may be sufficient leverage to bust the door open ready for a string of other petitions using Human Rights law to regain a quality of life we are 'entitled' to. Kinda playing government, & every fundamentalist mooching terrorist crook at their own game. Notice no mention of guns at all...
