Ideally, the actor playing John Galt in Atlas Shrugged Part 3 will appear to have jumped right off of the pages of Atlas Shrugged. However, in our quest to find the perfect John Galt, some tough choices may have to be made. That's where you come in.

If you had to choose, which would you consider the number one priority in casting John Galt?

A. As long as the actor looks and acts like John Galt, I don't care what his personal beliefs are.
B. The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost.

I prefer B over A and the cast from ASI. I also agree with the following from Rocky Road:
I would like to see a relatively unknown play John Galt in Part 3. Any large actor will bring along viewer's prejudices, and preconceived images, of their past roles.
Somehow I think that the right actor will relentlessly solicit this role, and for all the right reasons.

One of the best newcomers is Pål Sverre Hagen from KON TIKI. A fantastic range, regal & tall.

John Galt needs to be the perfect man. Clear eyed, sharp features and an intense commanding focus.

If you've seen KON TIKI, then you'll get to experience Pål's excellent range. Scoop him up or someone will. ;-)

Please have someone who can act well and who has great chemistry with the Dagny actress. The actor has to have a spark in his eye and a passion for getting into the character. Frankly, I don't care if his politics are different than mine, as long as he can be the character on screen. Please think about getting someone who is relatively unknown for this role because John Galt is "unknown" to the world until this part of the book.

'Atlas Shrugged' sold a million copies last year, according to recently released records. That is phenomenal, and very encouraging.

The records show, however, that only 2 were shipped within the Hollywood zip code....

    Don't get your 'hopes' up....

I've read many of the comments but didn't see any of the 30ish up and coming male actors which would do justice to the role of John Galt. Had you considered Chris Pine, Orlando Bloom or Jude Law yet? They are all actually in their 30s (not in their 70s like some of the suggestions), good looking enough to turn even Dagny's head, look like they could fit in anywhere and actors people would listen to when they speak. A book shouldn't be judged by its cover but if the book isn't interesting enough to even open, what good is it? People nowadays are mainly so shallow, that you need a ton of window dressing to get them to forking over real money to go to a movie. There is so much competition for all the movies which debut from week to week, that unless you have good looking actors who can actually act (and keep you from falling asleep or walking out on the movie), you may have trouble getting and keeping moviegoers interest up. The message of John Galt is important and you need a young Jimmy Stewart who will enthrall the audience to get that message through. Please don't do what you did in AS II by casting weak performers as they do not do justice to either Ayn Rand or her message.

that's a tough one as I expect both. For an actor to portray John Galt, they need to identify with the character and if they don't it would be a sham,

I bow to your experience and wisdom!

I actually wonder 'why' the producer(s) would seek our thoughts about this: it is their budget, their vision, and their ultimate success or failure. The last time that I 'cast' a movie perfectly was 'Stagecoach', with John Wayne! (Not totally true...I did an awesome job on 'Shindler's List'....)

    Keep me posted!

    A. A good actor is a good actor. Taylor Schilling is a liberal, but she did a great portrayal of Dagny Taggart. (That's not to put down Samantha Mathis at all; she also was a great Dagny.)

I'd choose A. I understand that one's personal beliefs could be distracting, but hey, if he disagrees with Rand, let's just let reality decide, eh? How about David Lyons ('The Cape')? I feel like he has the look I imagined when I read about John Galt and could probably handle the role well. I'm guessing your casting will be from TV actors primarily, so he seems like a logical choice. But reading that recent comment about Jim Caviezel, whoa, hadn't even thought of him, but he'd be perfect for the role, absolutely.

    I vote Benedict Cumberbatch.
Yes, he's English and probably socialistic (he is an Obama supporter, last I heard), but he is extremely talented--and isn't a major part of Objectivism about choosing talent? Realistically, he's a big name and could attract more viewers internationally, which the movies do need.
He does come from a wealthy, hard-working family, and so I assume he understands the value of the dollar. Maybe.
But he's talented. Very. I could see him playing Galt.

I agree ted, but they're too old, don't you think? we need someone who is old enough to have done some serious technology building, but young enough to want to share it for the first time with the perfect woman. John Galt is still building his first life, not on the trophy wife second life. ok, that was provocative-on purpose. in trollville. what am I thinking?

You had me nodding along...until you brought up Brad Pitt.

Too young, way to liberal, and too cute by half. He would sleepwalk through the part, and subconsciously sabotage the message to keep his Beverly Hill's standings.

The actor has to be a Hollywood outsider, and fearless of the backlash.

I believe A and then B. While I don't know if Damien Lewis is even aware of Ayn Rand or Atlas Shrugged, I believe that after a reading, he would knock people's socks off as John Galt. With a powerful yet quiet persona that reflects strength and character, he carried the Band of Brothers series. I am an engineer, and Lewis would be believable as an engineering genius.
