Ideally, the actor playing John Galt in Atlas Shrugged Part 3 will appear to have jumped right off of the pages of Atlas Shrugged. However, in our quest to find the perfect John Galt, some tough choices may have to be made. That's where you come in.

If you had to choose, which would you consider the number one priority in casting John Galt?

A. As long as the actor looks and acts like John Galt, I don't care what his personal beliefs are.
B. The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost.

I think Matthew McConaughey would make a good Galt. Not sure about his political stance, but since I have not heard that he is a flaming progressive, I hope he leans to the right and stays below the radar in Hollywood.

    B. No liberals please. Otherwise it defeats the purpose of the movie and the conservative message.

8^) I figured that might come up. If I remember it was how they met. But they do manage to cover
    1. being able to act
    2. being in line with the material ( they are republicans but more libertarian, so I suspect they would not need to re-read the book)
    3. they are younger and better looking than most of the other choices.

In the end Mr. Thompson could pull his mask off and be all " and we would have succeeded if it were for these nosy kids."

Check out his son, he is a bit younger but still what 45 or so but looks younger than that. Also, yes Bab5 was pretty damm libertarian.

For the love of John Galt and all the female viewers out there, can people stop recommending actors over 55?? I don't want to see John Galt breaking his hip during his big escape scene. Also, I would prefer someone with his original teeth. I think Ayn would agree with me since she seemed to like younger men.

I'm pretty sure I remember it mentioned in the book he was in his mid to late 30's

It would only be fitting for the actor to be played by one that supports the true meaning of capitalism; and that may not be representative of one specific political party, but believed by the individual himself. Half the art of being a good actor is "believing" the character you are portraying!

The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost: My suggestion.... Daniel Day-Lewis. I believe he could pull it off beautifully!

Remember Shane, the movie, with Alan Ladd? Like that. Can't get him, he is already in a valley. T1, terminator 1, Michel Biehn fits direct description .

Galt would be best served by an actor who has, at least, some understanding of Ayn Rand's ideas...I would consider David Strathairn as a likely Galt candidate. Another possibility is the rising star Ryan Gosling. Damon doesn't strike me as believable simply because of his leftist rants.

Kurt Russell, he is the right age and I do think it will matter in Hollywood the actor's ideas about Ayn Rand. He's a great fit.

He is passionate and knowledgeable about the founding principles of this country. I believe his superb acting skill and notable accolades would be positives attributes for the film.

Keanu Reeves is certainly eye candy, but one of the worst actors to ever appear in movies. He seems devoid of thought.

Very good observations. It may not be possible to get most of the actors mentioned here, but it does let the producers know the type of actor the audience wants. By naming known actors, we can have a discussion because we know who they are.
