Ideally, the actor playing John Galt in Atlas Shrugged Part 3 will appear to have jumped right off of the pages of Atlas Shrugged. However, in our quest to find the perfect John Galt, some tough choices may have to be made. That's where you come in.

If you had to choose, which would you consider the number one priority in casting John Galt?

A. As long as the actor looks and acts like John Galt, I don't care what his personal beliefs are.
B. The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost.

The dude who played GUS in Breaking Bad would be cool as John Galt. He is black tho, and I think John Galt was white in the book.

Since acting is an art, not a philosophy, John Galt should be a good actor. If the movie is well planned, and the actor skilled, the actor will become a libertarian. The actor should look very average, so that he can disappear into the crowd. The actor should display humility, humor, and hope when playing his role.

If you want a strong and good looking actor that still has conservative beliefs, how about Dean Cain. You can't go wrong with Superman. (^_^)

Unfortunately Jon Voight is in his seventies also but would really reflect the very meaning of John Galt.

Well, to be honest I was REALLY disappointed with the actors in the second movie. The third movie needs to be redemption for the second. The second movie was written well, I was just let down by the characters. Whoever plays John Galt needs to be a complete reflection of the character. They must have the complete look and attitude of John Galt, research the role properly.

I agree with statement B. Just as long as he's not an outspoken liberal. Too bad Clint Eastwood is to old to do the part and has retired from acting. How about Tom Selleck. He would be perfect if he's available. He fits that mold but would more than likely want too much money and wouldn't want to take on any new projects outside his TV show.

After looking at all the suggestions I feel the top three who are young, charismatic, looks like they are super smart and cool-headed are Benedict Cumberbatch, Jim Caviezel and Simon Baker... go get 'em!

If your going to put Beck in, have him be Jim Taggart. He'd nail that "You'll think of something!" light bulb moment for Rearden.

John Galt in the book is really a personality-less pretty boring person. The important characters are Dagny, Hank Rearden, and the others- those are the ones that need to be selected carefully. Go back to the original actors in Part I. Part II werent believable. It made the movie kind of boring

It is probably too late in the process for this but a national or touring casting event along the lines of "Who is John Galt?" where people from various cities all audition until you can find just the right person. The talent is out there and you don't have to go to Hollyweird to find it!

If that isn't an option, I'd have to go with A.

(fwiw - an event like this would also be really good publicity for the movie)

Mostly B, just because I think a true believer will come across better than someone who is not. Of course liberal actors have been good at playing strong conservative parts. So I'm torn, but still believe B.

Neil Boortz could play an excellent Mouch. He has just the right demeanor and knows how those people think all too well. LOL (get him in somewhere though - please)

The strongest characteristic I'd expect to see in John Galt is a clear-eyed gaze that has deep understanding. He is a man who deeply understands people, society and physics, so a gaze that looks through people into their minds would be best.

Well you are asking me to choose and giving me two options that on the surface appear to say that you cannot find someone who "looks" the part and believes in the philosophy of Ayn Rand. To be true to the book the actor, in my opinion has to have both. Sorry

Also, no Galt wasn't English, but neither is Kahn. Cumberbatch is capable of speaking with an American accent. Again, goes to his talent. We can't judge who would portray Galt best by comparing Galt to who these people are in real life. That's why they're actors.

The actor should understand Ms. Rand and her philosophy to the deepest level. She ran into this problem with Gary Cooper as Howard in the Fountainhead movie. He should be tall, thin, intense, and have a quit, deep voice. He should look like a creator rather than a looter.
