Ideally, the actor playing John Galt in Atlas Shrugged Part 3 will appear to have jumped right off of the pages of Atlas Shrugged. However, in our quest to find the perfect John Galt, some tough choices may have to be made. That's where you come in.

If you had to choose, which would you consider the number one priority in casting John Galt?

A. As long as the actor looks and acts like John Galt, I don't care what his personal beliefs are.
B. The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost.

All of Charlie Sheen's brains can be found in his nose membranes....

Galt didn't have anger issues, he just walked away from what he didn't like.

I liked the 'roustabout' that showed up to fix Dagny's train in Part 2...the one that actually remembered John Galt from his 20th Century Motor days.

Give him a trim, and let him rip!

The actor should possess the same understanding and passion for the ideas. Otherwise, it is just another user movie.

B, without some belief in it, authenticity would be lacking...

I can make arguments for both so I don't think it matters. Hire the actor that does the best audition. If they don't believe in the role or the subject matter, they will eliminate themselves.

    B. Gary Cooper had the right look for Howard Roark in the Fountainhead, but the actor wasn't credible because he didn't believe in what he was saying. Whoever plays Galt should have a fundamental agreement with the words he will be saying.

    James Caviezel
    Gary Senise
    Dr. Ben Carson

Indeed, I agree that Galt is not like the other characters. He is, in fact: somewhat of a geek. He is mildly personable, but intense, intelligent and creative, and engineer. I seem to be beating the drum for Damien Lewis, owing to his performance in Band of Brothers. I recommend that series (available on DVD at Amazon and at Netflix) so that others can see what a fine and believeble actor Lewis is. I don't disregard your suggestion of MacQuire, but I just don't know of him, so you may be right about him as well. But have a look at Lewis.

I would tend to agree with you, except that from what I have seen: a good actor is a good actor who studies his part and can become the character he portrays. I have seen some bad apples in person deliver some fine performances on the screen. I think Damien Lewis is such a fine actor. He was in Band of Brothers in the role of an American officer (a real person) and was, I thought, outstanding.

Damien Lewis is a British actor, but if owing only to his performance in Band of Brothers, I believe he would make a fine John Galt. He has a persona that exhibits integrity and sincerity and is a good speaker.

Rand Paul! He'd be great (he's even good looking.) Not sure he has the actor's chops, however. Well, then again, standing up day after day in front of that bunch without projectile vomiting would take some acting ability. Matt Damon would be my choice of major actor.

I would like to see someone who believes in the book Atlas Shrugged and see's what is going on in the real world compared to what Ayn Rand knew. Most actors are what they are as long as the paycheck goes in the bank. Playing John Galt will be tough but, I have faith in the people who do the choosing.

Quality actors can play a variety of roles, the quality of the actors talents outweighs his personal viewpoint of the role he or she is playing. Gary Sinise, Kurt Russell, and Anthony Hopkins have all shown a great acting ability to take on a variety of characters.

    A. Actors are actors, whether they do or do not believe in the character they are portraying. The quality of the actor will make or break the part played.

And what is wrong with the Galt we followed in Part 2?

    D. B. Sweeney handled it just fine.

That would be sacrilege to cast ANY of those you just listed. It makes me physically ill just to even think about it. NEVER!!!

I agree. I was devastated when I saw the casting change. It ruined it for me. The first ones were excellent. When you have a movie in parts like this, you should NEVER make major part changes. It loses credibility. What a colossal mistake!
