Ideally, the actor playing John Galt in Atlas Shrugged Part 3 will appear to have jumped right off of the pages of Atlas Shrugged. However, in our quest to find the perfect John Galt, some tough choices may have to be made. That's where you come in.

If you had to choose, which would you consider the number one priority in casting John Galt?

A. As long as the actor looks and acts like John Galt, I don't care what his personal beliefs are.
B. The actor needs to possess a deep understanding of, and passion for, Ayn Rand's ideas first and foremost.

You did put words in my mouth. You used the phrase "not all actors". I never said nor insinuated "all actors" were hedonistic douche bags, I specifically stated do not use one of those who are. By your reply that not "all are" you are suggesting that I said that "all" are. Your use of the word "all" seeks to undermine my point by attributing to my statement a sentiment I never conveyed. Or perhaps you simply wanted to state the obvious, and although that doesn't add any value to the conversation, it still carries a suggesting that I had committed a sweeping generalization, which I didn't. Either way, you were putting words in my mouth.

Completely agree - Nathan Fillion would be my first choice! Definitely the right age and look plus he would bring the independent Mal Reynolds attitude to the character.

I never realized that was Jerry's kid, so little does he look like him. :-)

I don't think Shawn has the gravitas for JG though.

Don't cast like you did in Part II, which was awful. Part I was good for a number of characters, by comparison.

Given Rand's theory of art and aesthetics, you really have to pay attention to how the characters look if you want to be true to her vision.

As for Galt, Clint Eastwood in his late twenties?

Ok so I picture strength in Galt along with humility, intelligence, kindness, not blinded by emotions yet a higher concern for humans in general. The actor who'd play Galt can be an idealist in real life, while the opposite; a known wild, idiotic actor who lacks public respect in general, would detract from the story, movie, and greatness of Ayn Rand's brilliant novel.
Therefore, actors who I feel could convey the true character of John Galt would be:
Eric Bana, Dermot Mulroney, Jim Caviezel.
Although these actors are no doubt higher paid actors, as I peered into the dark shadow of Galt's face, listening to his voice while he reached for Dagney's hand in the final scene of A. S. 2, I couldn't help but picture these actors(or someone extremely similar) for there strength yet gentleness & fortitude.but that's just my opinion :)

If you have an actor who does a great job depicting Galt and then disses the ideas in interviews or otherwise reveals himself to be an idiot, that undermines much of what you are trying to accomplish with the movies.

BRAD BEYER actor from Jerich. But he has got to be a "believer" and walk the walk. No actor can just repeat lines and do John Galt justice.

My pick is Keanu Reeves. I don't have a clue about his understanding of Ayn Rand but he was very convincing in The Matrix. He certainly has the physical attributes and can play the role of a very smart person.

Daniel Craig would be ideal, but he might be
to expensive. Oddly enough, Swedish actor
Micheasl Nyqvist might work (they played
the same role in the Millennium trilogy,
in the English and Swedish versions, respectively). OK, Nyqvist might have a Swedish accent, but maybe John Galt hung out
with Ragnar Dannaskjöld. (Or, Nyqvist could
    play Ragnar).

nice description! Have you read the first page of the AS chapter "Atlantis" recently? An expansion of what you said. That description is so good...and it bookends nicely with the description of Dagny in the beginning. Remember: "...a face that bore no mark of pain or fear or guilt." Find me an actor who is that.

Really? This is nothing...give me some sharp sticks, some special effects ropes and elastic (later to become invisible on the screen), film it all in slow motion and then speed it up on the screen later...I could do this too. (Okay, that's a total lie, but you get my point). I would strongly protest an Asian Dagny...especially if she had that accent... the character would be lost. hmmm I was going to add something to the end here that would lure OA into this...but now I forget. Brain fart.

I think Matthew McConaughey would make a good Galt. Not sure about his political stance, but since I have not heard that he is a flaming progressive, I hope he leans to the right and stays below the radar in Hollywood.
