It is always astounding how many otherwise intelligent people there are taking it upon themselves to mischaracterize Rand’s work… Do you suppose they have an interest in spreading distortions or are they that obtuse? O.A.
I'm not sure this election can settle such a philosophically precise issue--especially because it's not on the table for most people. If anything, this election is about rejecting far-left centralized planning as "the answer" and possibly politicians/elected officials as celebrities/saviors.
I disagree with this article. Altruism does not exist, and cannot exist. The same can be said about selfishness. At least in the typical definition of both.
You cannot be selfish without helping others. Its impossible. If you do things that help yourself the ripple effects will help others, even if you do not intend to do so.
Steve jobs created apple and give nearly nothing to charity when he was younger. When asked about it he said its my money, I do what I want with it. he was selfish be all definition but look at all the people who are employed because of his selfishness. It helped others.
So long as the Altruistic act is done because the giver wants to do it, it is impossible to do so without getting in return, even if that getting is simply feeling better about oneself, something comes back.
So the very idea that the election is about altruism and selfishness is a choice of words that remove the read debate from the election.
It is about the right to choose for oneself, or the ability of others to make choices for you. It is about who can make the right choices for you? Yourself or the government. It is about free agency, freedom, free choice whatever words you like. Altruism has nothing to do with it.
O.A.
I know I shouldn’t laugh, but I can’t help myself. Thanks for the unabashed reply!
O.A.
(My favorite is first)
