Another non-professional review of Atlas Shrugged the movie – Part II

My wife and I recently saw the Atlas Shrugged part II movie at the world premier event. About a week before, I was notified that I had been chosen as one of the winners of the Atlas Shrugged “earning contest.” I had “earned” a trip for my wife and I to fly to and stay in Washington DC where the event was being held.

As a Libertarian and somewhat a fan of Ayn Rand's philosophy, I enjoyed the movie. But unexpectedly, my wife also enjoyed the movie. She is a devout Evangelical Christian and knows very little about Libertarian or Objectivism principles. Where she takes things on biblical faith, I tend to question things a lot more.

Having read Atlas Shrugged, the second movie began unexpectedly for me, and as such I was thrown a bit for the first five to ten minutes. Once I got past this initial phase, my mind started to take in the movie more consciously. As a libertarian, I was thrilled to see the messages of the movie develop in ways an average person could relate. It presented a crumbling world in the near future where the 99% had turned into the 99.98%. It is a world that very few sane individuals would care to live in.

I thought some of the CGI effects could have been better but overall the movie was quite good. All of the key speeches in the book were there, though in much much shorter form. There was emotion, nail biting tension and more inspiring pro-liberty dialog than I've seen in a long time. Unlike the first movie, the logic of the scenes flowed much smoother and with purpose. Yet, those who have not read the book are unlikely to understand some of finer points. For example, what is the meaning of a smoldering cigarette with a dollar sign engraved on it?

Anyone who cares about the reasons we need to protect the founding principles of America should go see this movie. Take your friends. I suspect this movie is going to be talked about a lot before the up coming election decides our next set of rulers.

I am looking forward to Friday as well. I was disheartened when I found that none of the theaters will have a midnight showing. I am however not surprised. On a bright note I have reached out to two local radio personalities. One is a staple in the Evangelical Christian/conservative community and the other is a staunch conservative on a syndicated radio show. I'm buying their tickets and hopefully their voice and influence will bring many more to the theater.
