Revolutions Are Seldom Revolutionary

Excerpt:

Ukraine’s Orange Revolution deteriorated into democratically elected Victor Yanukovich’s kleptocracy. Now the EU and the US have championed another revolution with no assurances that the same thing will not happen again. Democracy is the enabler for welfare state kleptocracy. There are always more votes for freebies than there are producers to be robbed, and why shouldn’t those in the government take a cut, too? Ukraine’s welfare state is in desperate financial straits and its revolutionaries are expecting freebies from its champions.

Then there is that little matter of its neighbor, Russia. It took control of Crimea while EU leaders and President Obama dithered and sputtered. A lesson from the playground: don’t make threats if you can’t back them up. You would think Obama might have learned something from his Syria red line farce, but he never learns from experience or shuts up (except when asked about his administration’s scandals or his college transcripts). Putin wasn’t exactly trembling in his Ferragamos at Obama’s pathetic, finger-waving admonition that the US “will stand with the international community,” and “there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine.” Yeah, we’ll boycott the Olympics! Oops, they’re already over. Then we’ll make Billie Jean King ambassador to Russia! For anyone keeping score, put Crimea in the Russian column with Transdnistria, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia.

The only revolutions the US should get excited about are those in which the revolutionaries are waving copies of the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, or the US Constitution. Come to think of it, when we get around to overthrowing our own overgrown, out-of-control blob of a government, let’s hope our revolutionaries are waving copies of those works, or the new boss will be the same as the old boss.
