It said 100 of them came from IEEE journals. There are countless IEEE journals, and there are a small handful I read monthly and bimonthly. I would love to see the fake papers.

IEEE is the electronics engineers professional society. I'm an officer in our local IEEE section. I had not heard about this. It's really shocking. When it comes to electronics research, IEEE journals are where it's published. I'm amazed that they would allow gibberish articles to be posted.

I wonder if other articles cite them. I wonder if I ever came upon one and thought I wasn't smart enough in their area of expertise to understand.

These are just "hard" science journals. They pale to insignificance when compared to the gibberish that pollutes social science journals.

You have to dig a bit deeper than Fox News. As the story says, this is known. The most famous case was Alan Sokal's "fashionable nonsense" over 20 years ago. But an MIT professor pulled the same sort of stunt (using automation) just to prove that it can be done. Right now, about two million articles a year are published. So, 100 fakes is hardly the end of the world. (See report here:
