Lefty Girl Scouts

I've stopped buying GS cookies. Some of the money raised goes to the council and national. When I see a GS selling cookies I give them a donation. That they can keep in their local troop.

    Someone's selling them in one of my client's offices. I didn't give it a second thought. I didn't know they stood up for a liberty issue. I may buy some thin mints.

      The same thing that the boy scouts have been fighting - and are starting to lose.

      Until just a year ago this was the oath or motto as it's now called;
      On my honor I will do my best
      To do my duty to God and my country
      and to obey the Scout Law;
      To help other people at all times;
      To keep myself physically strong,
      mentally awake, and morally straight.

      There's a lot there that certain quarters find "challenging"

        As far as I know, that is still the Scout Oath.

        BSA gave over to political correctness when they accepted the openly gay. There is no reason for any sexuality in scouting. The day they accepted this new premise was the last day that I contributed to national or council. I only now provide funds to the local troops and only if it does not go to council or higher.

        GSA is a little easier in this regard as the troops are truly independent, but GS cookies are still a fundraiser for council and national, so I refuse to partake anymore. I still give to the local troops, but refuse to support the upper organization.

          No room for sexuality in scouting? You mean no room for homosexuality. I guess sexuality is fine though as long as it's all totally hetero...

            No. There is no room for sexuality homo or hetero in a troop of Girl Scouts imo. There are too many things out there about sex. It should be kept out of the scouts totally.

              Correct. No ask, no tell would be appropriate. So long as there is no harm happening, I don't give a rip about someone's sexual orientation.
              I personally know of at least 2 scout leaders who were homosexual. It never came up in the context of scouting so it never caused a problem. Those who equate homosexuality with pedophilia are morons.

                Don't ask, don't tell? So you want to force people to hide who they really are or face being expelled and ostracized for it? The military abandoned that policy for a reason...

                I agree that scout leaders really don't ever need to be talking about sex, but institutionalized persecution is not the answer, and kicking people out or preventing them from joining simply because they're open about who they love is not a good policy, nor is it a good policy to allow them to join only under the condition that they lie about their identity. This idea that gay people are somehow automatically more sexual than straight people is foolishness. Straight people and gay people are both equally sexual. The only difference is that their sexualities point in opposite directions.

              So then we keep out everyone who has any sexual impulses whatsoever? Sounds good. If you've ever had any sexual feelings of any kind in your entire life, either homo or hetero, then you shouldn't be in scouting. Asexual people only. After all, we have to keep sexuality out of scouting...

                Our society is obsessed with sex. It's that simple. You hear about it all the time, everywhere. Children are already inundated with sex messages all over the place. The scouts has never been about sex and should not allow it as a topic of conversation. It does not matter if it is homo or hetero. Sex should not be talked about in scouts period.

                  Right, and I agree with you on that point. I'm simply pointing out that it's illogical to forbid openly LGBT from participating in scouting on that basis, because that basis is essentially insinuating that gays and lesbians are sexual, but that straight people are not, which is obviously a ridiculous position, but people often don't realize the ridiculousness of it unless it's explicitly pointed out.

                  It reminds me of this news story I saw once about a mall that had a policy forbidding public displays of affection, and anyone who engaged in such displays would be asked to leave. At least that's what the policy said on paper. But when it came to actual practice, the mall security only enforced the policy when gays and lesbians violated it, while allowing straight people to violate it all they wanted without consequence. It's like straight sex was invisible to them, but gay sex stood out.

                  If they can enforce the policy equally against everyone, then it's fine. But if they cannot enforce it equally, then they need to be stripped of their ability to enforce it at all.

                    Is scouts the place to discuss sex? No, tell them to talk to their parents or doctor or school counselor or with a friend as they walk home.

                      Sounds fine to me. I've got no objections to that. My objection was purely against the misguided claim that allowing gay kids to participate in scouting was somehow promoting sexuality.

      It's gotten pretty bad. My wife went looking for a local GS troop to start our little one as a Daisy. She was told "we are putting one together" and of course she volunteered to help out. They have decided that she is the troop leader of the brand new troop 43232. No experience, no training, and now there are $2,000 worth of cookies in my freaking living room earmarked for their "booth sales" at Walmart this weekend.

      She is going out of her head with all of it, and its become a distraction to them. She will lead the troop exactly one year, and that is all. Being in the south I think 4H and possibly FFA would be a better deal for them anyway.

      The same thing that has been happening in all organizations - infiltration by the far left to bend the organizations to their political ends.

    Lefty Girl Scouts? The article clearly says that the Girl Scouts DON'T have any connections to Planned Parenthood, and that all such accusations are false. Plus, the group that accused them was violating copyright law by using their logo without permission. Selective reading much?

      However, girl scouts national made a big deal of naming Kathleen Sebilious as a Woman of Courage. Wtf? She is a pokitical appointee who has failed in her leadership overseeing a highly contraversial piece of legislation and taking on the religious organizations opposed to certain
      demands in the law which contradict their faith.
      Wendy Davis is running for governor (you don't get more political than that) and best known for filabustering the anti abortion bill brought up in Texas legislature. As well, leftist feminism indoctrination has been part of scout materials for some time now. But specifically elevating and promoting government or political figures seems in your face to those supporters of the scouts disagreeing with those politics or policies. Why so contraversial? Seems like agenda pushing funded by girl scouts hsrd at work selling for the organization.

          well, you and I are not on the same side on that debate completely, but it has no place being promoted in the Girl Scouts.
          As to the girl scout logo being on the flier-as long as it's clear you are not saying you represent the Girl Scouts of America-you can put the logo on your flier. IN this case, you are identifying who you are disagreeing with. In the other case where teh blog link says mygirlscout...that would be a violation, because you are representing a group within the girl scouts-whether leader adults or girls.
          The Oath is so far removed from what it was when I was involved-I can't believe it.
          fun fact about kh. When I was a jr in high school, my council appointed me as a delegate to National Convention. It was in Denver, and I got to ride the Zepher with a select group from our region. It was so much fun. I felt very grown up. The drama: I was also in the school play-leading role. I was going to miss 2-3 days of play practice. The drama coach told me I had to choose. Frankly, I didn't see why. She kicked me off the play and put in a sophomore in my role. I took it to the principal. Someone could read my lines for me, blocking had already been completed and I knew it, and it was important that someone from our high school would get that honor. I made my case and he made the coach give me my role back. To soothe her, I promised to have all my lines memorized by the time I got back. and I did. It was both an exhilarating and very tense week. This past fall, the Girl Scouts shut down several camps in Iowa and Illinois. That was very sad for me. My old camp was one of them. Every summer, the boy scout camp from across the river in Illinois would invite the jr high and sr high campers over for their Eagle Scout ceremony. I think that's the one-the one where the boys are sent out into the woods to overnight. Girl scouts would never do anything like that. ;(
