New to the Gulch

New to the Gulch. Read Ayn Rand in HS and college, made no sense. The Reagan years were upon us and America came out of the slump. I re-read Atlas and awoke to a new meaning. I bought 2 dozen books and started handing them out to educate folks, most took freely, read and came back for serious discussion. I preach the gospel of Objectivism now to all who will listen; I drank the kool-aid, lived and want more.

Well, not your traditional 'MAKER'. After college, I started out in the automotive repair industry. I joined the US Army 'To see the world'. I did 22 years, four combat tours and other deployments; I have been to every continent except for Antarctica. I did my part to train and mold soldier into thinkers not robots. Now as a DoD civilian manager I make my employees THINK. I have required readings and then discussions about how the material can be implemented into increased production. My constant mantra is ‘rub two dimes together and make a quarter’ (Even before all this sequestration stuff). Choose the hard RIGHT over the easy WRONG.

It occurs to me that we should buy Atlas Shrugged DVDs in bulk and pass them out.

I have 2x loaner sets of DVDs that I borrow out to folks that have a hard time with the book. Helps them 'Connect-the-dots'. You have to crawl-walk-run and waking up to 'Hey this is really happening to me right now!' is sometimes hard on the beginner.

A Kindle version of AS is a good idea for the current status-quo of today. Kindle=energy, yes a small amount and able to be charged by solar panel. I’m also a TEOTWAWKI survival instructor, I teach that all items you will need be in print. AS will be good reading in the dark days after TEOTWAWKI. I didn’t just drink the Kool-Aid, I make it too!

Welcome to the Gulch jarmans. Congratulations on getting people to come back and discuss the book. It's been my experience that when many people see the size of the book their eyes roll back in their heads and they start drooling. I'm having some friends over Friday night to see AS Part I and hoping to get discussions going and to get the book read.

My approach is simple….LISTEN FIRST. I listen to their issues, problems and complaints; people want to tell their story. Next, remembering Maslow's hierarchy of needs and how the Human being is motivated. Relate how Objectivism in their lives interacts with their Second Order of Need: SAFETY. Leave them to their thoughts and them later bring it up again. This time talk about how the events of the day effect their First Order of Need: Physiological. How do the events effect their ability to provide food, clothing and shelter for their families. Now the awakening, they will start thinking and will turn from sheep to guard dogs. Provide the literature (Ayn Rand’s writing) for more growth.

Good plan... but getting others to take a good look at their life (OR the world) and connect some dots really seems to be a laborious effort for them. Unfortunately I don't think it will click for many until life becomes SO difficult they'll have no choice but to face it....and at that point, it'll be past too late.

Selection just like John Galt. You can tell by listening a person’s salt. That’s why I listen before preaching. Failure to prepare is a selection and as there is no life guard on the gene pool, you are either a survivor or food. Hence why I’m in the Gulch.

But, how to determine length (time) of benevolence? To complete strangers? to only "friends" and family? I'm interested in at what point are you no longer fed in your plan. Point for Maslow's hierarchy of needs and LS gets a point for laborious-

Okay...admittedly I have never heard of Maslow's...I just now googled the pyramid (have yet to read anything else), but how long have I been saying that there's a connection between the fear of hunger and the motivation to have self responsibility and provide for yourself and family?? The American gov has taken the threat of hunger completely OUT of the hierarchy of need. It's now an entitlement...a RIGHT to be provided food by the gov. This is a HUGE piece of the puzzle (or perhaps, the pyramid) that never gets talked about.
