It was my first day in the Gulch and I just wondered what the Top Earners Today and This week were. In order to evaluate them I just needed data.as to how they accrued. I find them useful and they point me toward the more learned / popular / verbose / and leaders as it were. Thank you all for your help.

    Hmm, just ignore the points?
The point system has been discussed at length, pros and cons. It's a bit better than 'likes' on Facebook since often there is some thought involved here, but since the points are limitless and cost nothing to award them, they are somewhat like fiat. They are part popularity, part reward, part whatever you like.
Just post good things, as you have been MA, and enjoy the Gulch.

    From the Gulch FAQ:
Points are how we, as a community, gauge member activity. Whenever you add new content, comment, or when other users vote on your content and/or comments, you earn points. While points have very little real world value, they reflect essentially the value of a member's contribution to The Gulch.

Every time you post, you get 1 point. 1 post = 1 point. Whenever other eligible members vote on your post, your point total is affected. 1 post = 1 point; 3 upvotes + 2 downvotes would then raise the post total point value to 2 (1 + 3 - 2).

Well you can get a lot of points by saying something that a number of people decide to give a thumbs up to.

Alternatively you can type in a whole lot of one-liners in lots of discussions and get a point for each one.
