All things considered, in today's world environment and things happening here in the U.S., it was not an over-reaction as alleged. Over cautious perhaps, but not an over-reaction.

Another case of deliberate provocation by a Muslim activist in order to gain sympathy for the poor, put-upon Muslims. I don't blame the 14 year old. There's hardly a 14 year old who doesn't want to gain his father's respect. The school did the right thing. It was the only thing they could do and the father knew it. He should be arrested, and fined in order to pay for the trouble he caused -- not the kid.

I saw this immediately after it came out, and saw a lot of my FB friends support this young kid. I felt uneasy about it. Normally I would be ridiculing the authorities for overreacting. I still do feel they overreaacted, but I also think there was provocation. I mean, come on, that was very poor taste on the kids part. I just wish this whole episode had been handled quietly and for that reason, never having heard about it.

There was no handling it quietly possible. The activist father would have brewed up an appropriate storm on his own if he had to. Its what activists do, like the one in the White House.

We need Atlantis now. The fedgov has no place in this; the local school officials are moronic paranoids; there are real problems to solve and this is nothing but a divisive distraction .

I disagree. The school did exactly what it should have - err'd on the side of the children's safety,;exactly what this muslim child and his father (a muslim activist) wanted for a lawsuit.

If the school had not acted and this was a bomb...

Its not like muslims never suicide bomb using kids, women, and the elderly. Its not like muslims haven't called for lone wolf attacks on US soil.

The kid, at the behest of his father, allowed this to escalate for a reason.

One of my jobs in past life was that sort of item. Not EOD but making them. There were two of us on every team. When I became a police officer for a few years the skill was noted and used. It's two different perspectives. These days as law enforcement officer one of my first thoughts would have been ....when do the profiling charges begin, the inevitable second guessing back at the cop shop to see if there was really sufficient probable cause. Did EOD actually show up? Who made the call to do this or do that. I think back ...it's one of the reasons I left the job. But I also think It's not like Caucasian college professors have never been terrorists - like the Presidents buddy in Chicago? I'm sure there will be an aftermath. the teachers for one will be grilled on what did you know and when did you know it? about Johnny's radio building hobby? How many other kids have you checked for suspicious items. Cell Phones are most certainly in that category

Your right in disagreeing. And you are right about the lawsuit. Just for funs and grins and idle curiosity. Follow this and find out who the kids lawyer is, affiliations and if pro bono whose paying. I was a pretty good investigator. You are right about thinking it might be a setup. Question is which group of terrorists is behind it.

How was I able to do so much in my life? Just went out and did it instead of watching TV. I may not be a spring chicken but I'm certainly not young. On a good day I can pass for .....not that old. One day I'll tell you how to keep from getting carded at 7-11.

The lawyers are CIAR : Council for Islamic American Relations. Daddy is a muslim activist who ran for president of Sudan twice and now drives a cab. The kicker, to me, is that instead of the kid saying "Its a clock. Go talk to my first period teacher if you don't believe me", he clammed up and called Daddy who immediately called CIAR.

Noteable: this radio wasn't a project for school. The kid said he brought it to school to show his 1st period teacher. Teacher told him to not show it off in other classes because it could cause issues - he did anyway, even leaving wires exposed. To further make it more obvious that his was a scam, the clock he "built" was just the guts from a 1970s mini-clock he found on ebay for $22.00.

No direct connections to Soros but some one and two degree when you add in ACLU, Moveon.org, ACORN. Most lawyers of the left persuasion are ACLU member which is heavily funded by Soros an the Secular Progressives. He also has connections to some fairly benign organizations specializing in civil right for Islamics and others. One such defeated a move and removed from the Patriot Act suspending the Constitution within 100 miles centered on the boarder. that seems to have found it's home in the Act anyway by making it a blanket for th entire country replacing probable cause with suspicion of. It gets very complex very fast almost like a web. But nothing direct.

"err'd on the side of the children's safety"
If it were really a case of erring on the side of safety over liberty, they would have evacuated the school or moved the science project away from people.

AJ, the school's response was illogical and incompetent. If they did think it was a bomb they should have evacuated the school, which they didn't.
As more facts come out it appears they were played for fools and fell for it. I still want to see the source for the claim that the clock was moving backwards as a countdown clock. Even so, other kids are getting police called on them for biting a pop tart into the shape of a gun and yelling "pow pow." That is a common thread of insanity too.

Even if it was evident there was no explosive, here's a Muslim kid playing around with what could be a trigger for one later.

And what about the caucasian persuasion Professors son? The one in Chicago. Or the kids in the science fairs. Or the sons and daughters of members of the military holding MOS 18C? Forget the last one we already know what this government thinks of us.

This kind of thing will stop being effective if people stop feeling guilty about being American. If there is any truth to this story (I have my doubts) it was only done to capitalize on people's weaknesses. And, even worse, they used a kid to do it...ugh.

I just read an article from an electrical engineer who claims
that this is just a manufactured clock removed from its case,
with the 9 volt back-up battery and 120 volt cord left intact.
makes sense to me. . I sleep with one like that. . not a countdown
    clock, though.

I bet that it was just a set-up to try to get noticed at school. -- j

Larger, it was a setup by the father (a muslim activist) to place a discrimination lawsuit on Irvine Texas. The matter could have been defused by th ekid saying "its a clock. Go ask Mr. So-in-so, my first hour teacher who examined it." Instead he clammed up like his father told him to while daddy called in the council for islamic American relations.

Keep watching to see how far this goes.

I'd never seen any prior mention of it being a countdown clock either. I would certainly view that much differently than "a clock".

I do find it curious that, if indeed the item was believed to be a bomb, the school was not evacuated and the bomb squad was not called.

Shouldn't the kid be put into cultural "sensitivity" training to understand how Americans would feel about bringing a timer right after 9-11? If a kid can be suspended for wearing the American flag on cinco de mayo, oh well.
