That was a lazy answer. Sorry. precise definitions are important. Misuse of definitions is one way to misrepresent reality. I should have said what they call self sacrifice.

Mackey immediately changes the definition of altruism. Definitions of words have context. For instance, if I am debating geometry but I use dictionary definition of obtuse "annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand" that is dishonest intellectually

He also misuses the phrase sacrifice. This appears to be a standard technique of how he debates. It is not intellectually honest. Then he changes selfishness into narcissism, where he is happy to use the correct definition. Mackey does not like definitions and is not interested in logic, but he likes emotions.

Very good. I am always amazed that so many people don't understand that love, compassion, and even self sacrifice serve our self interest.

A few points about this.

I really liked that Dr. Kelley brought up Bernard Mandeville's "The Fable of The Bees." One of the great pieces in English Lit of political satire in verse.

I found it interesting that Mr. Mackey called Dr. Kelley's (Rand's) redefinition of selfishness a semantic misdirection and then later called for a broader definition of the word selfishness.

The questioner who asked Mr. Mackey if he had looked at his customer base: that was funny.

Also funny was Dr. Kelley's "The Talk".

Of particular interest was Mr. Mackey calling Whole Foods his "utopia".
