I agree if we're going to focus on rare mass shootings we should focus on the times guns saved lives, not to mention the unknown times when a criminal decided not even to try a violent crime b/c of the chance someone might have use a gun on him/her.

The liberal / conservative thing, however, I think is completely bogus-- World Wrestling Federation of public policy.

There is an old statistic, not sure if it is valid anny mor. It was the % of murders committed by a convicted murderer. the % was on the order of 60%. The number of crimes in general committed by previously convicted criminal is even higher, someing like 80%.
This is why some police departments set up units whose job it was was to watch criminals, the most predatory one. Those departments that did this had a significant reduction in the crime rate.
These unites were basically outlawed because they had no probable cause to follow and observe the individuals.
That is why the individual must be armed and must be allowed to defend themselves just as Ms. Assem did.

To see how guns save lives see the NRA. They have a ton of stuff on this from way back when. They print articles on this topic and actual news stories that are ignored by the media. It is a very big deal - guns are huge savers of lives. More crooks get shot by citizens than cops. It ain't even close, not to mention the deterrent incidents when no shots fired.

The fact that private gun ownership can act as a deterrent against crime is definitely a very legitimate point.

However, trying to say that this woman's story isn't being reported because of bias in the so-called "liberal media" is pretty dumb, since I haven't seen the story reported in any conservative media, either. The fact that American media hasn't mentioned the story likely has more to do with the fact that American media tends to focus on events which occur in America. Seriously, how often do we get ANY news about what's going on in Australia? Obvious bias is obvious...
