We aren't up there already because

The whole idea was rejected by the eco-Nazi's.

We don't need it because of the new SW Texas oil fields

BP needs their cash to pay for the Gulf Oil Spill

The Russians sunk some nuclear subs up their and it might be dangerous (White Sea actually)

I like the one about if there is global warming why do we need icebreakers.

It's a cheap meaningless political ploy to create a legacy.

It's a cheap meaningless political red herring to divert attention from the Biden Disaster.

It's a cheap meaningless political trick to divert attention from the Hillary Rod Hams Disaster.

    All of the above.

The story is that the Russians sent a DSRV to the bottom and placed a plaque there, essentially saying that since no one ever did that, it is now claimed by Russia along with the mineral rights. This pretty much ignores international treaties to the contrary, but hey, in this day and age who gives a hoot about treaties and governing documents?

Beyond our ?mile limit off shore there is not much we can do about it.
It strikes me funny though, in one breath they say the ice has melted due to faux global warming but in the next breath they need icebreakers...The arctic ice has been growing and in some cases at a record rate...one must remember though...it's still summer now. Can anyone say...ice melts in summer? hahahahah

we have been wondering about that around here, lately,
and it seems unanimous that The Donald might get ol' Vlad's
attention. . it was so pitiful when we totally ignored our
Treaty with Ukraine and let them flop around like a fish on a cleaning table. -- j

Slow to respond? Maybe it's because there's no such place as the United States anymore.

Russia needs resources and its history is one of simply taking them to extend its reach. Obama wastes his time on Snowden and Syria when he should be dealing with this very real threat.

Russia is desperate for cash. Their space program is dependent on the Soyuz/Progress "rentals", so why not make them dependent on capitalist dollars for their Arctic development? We actually have them by the economic "short hairs," but Obama is too much of a wimp to give them a yank, and Putin knows it. Wonder what he'd do if he had to deal with President Trump?

Two things to consider; 1- why is it necessary to build ice breaker ships if the planet is warming up and the polar regions are melting away.2- considering that at this time russia has a glut of oil production that is selling as far as I am led to believe to cheap to support their economy why would they look to want more available oil? because like all governments they want more and more control over resources which translates to more control over the population.

Adventure travel companies already use Russian icebreakers under contract, so I would suggest the solution is to have any company that need the service to hire those same icebreakers until we produce our own (if that's even necessary).

We're doing the same thing with resupply of the ISS, paying the Russians for use of Soyuz until our own U.S. space supply services are available. When Dragon and the Boeing capsule become operational, reliance on the Russians will be reduced to their own needs, or dropped entirely. We can follow the same path for any Arctic icebreaker operations.
