I'm sure this is not the only unintended consequence of going with wind and solar. In fact there was a n ecology group that sued to stop the erection of a solar panel fram in the Mojave desert (Ithink) because the frogs and lizards were being blocked from the sum. this after campaigning for solar in the same spot.
A couple of things have really been holding solar back: average daily sunlight, efficiency of solar cells, cost of solar cells, etc., but none moreso than the ability to STORE the energy for later use. That may be changing: http://cleantechnica.com/2012/02/20/mit-...
The benefits are that this technology would be not only cheap, but made from plants rather than rare-earth metals, meaning that a spill of this stuff isn't going to require a HAZMAT team!
