A Strong Breed of Men

As most Americans are now painfully aware, our Constitution was not a perfect document, for there were certain powers granted to the government that should never have been granted. But if interpreted literally, it was a magnificent beginning because it valued freedom so highly. It was, and still is in conception and meaning, the greatest single political work in the history of man.

Should it not then be our goal as a people to return to a literal interpretation of this Constitution that valued freedom so highly and then set about to perfect it where it was flawed? Is it not then our job to reduce the tyrannical power of government and once again allow men to live, and trade, and interact as they see fit?

I don't wish to hijack this thread. Just one more injustice... I'm not sure of the outcome yet. I have reached out to some people in authority.

hey OA. How sad. Did they increase your taxes or some regulatory burden thing? Moving your business-could that be a good thing or it's all hurting your business. I'm very sorry to hear that. Focusing on that bullshit instead of building business is so harmful to the economy. But government does not care.

Indeed. Burke had quite a lot of brilliant things to say. If memory serves he and Paine did have some disagreement on some particular issue. I can't remember the details, but It is almost impossible to find any two people that are completely in agreement. Without diversity of opinion what would individuality be? From Benjamin Franklin's ADDRESS TO THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION "But though many private persons think almost as highly of their own infallibility as of that of their sect, few express it so naturally as a certain French lady who, in a dispute with her sister, said," "I don't know how it happens, sister, but I meet with nobody but myself that's always in the right -- Il n'y a que moi qui a tou- jours raison."

    Good morning khalling,
I have been very busy here lately. I am fighting a battle over property rights with the local statists at the township... I may even be moving my business, depending upon outcome. No time to examine every thread or get into some protracted battles on multiple fronts.. :(

Somebody has down-voted your comment... I don'rt know why, but I gave you back one.

    Regards,
    O.A.

When my buddy was in the Army he was asked on a form if he would shoot his own mother. Why would they ask that? This was 30 years ago...

Not at all. Most of them believe that "the ends justify the means" and that gov't is the answer to all problems. Thus it will be very easy for them to convince these toadies to clear away the "obstructionist" freedom lovers.

You are right. I could not find it in my sayings notebook so I tried to remember it. Didn't totally miss the mark.
Burke has some other interesting ones. I'll find the references and get them to you or perhaps post them here.

Original intent has been lost. It has been subverted to the detriment of our liberty.

Perhaps you are thinking of..."The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke
Great quote! :) The essence is what counts.
I quite agree, and for the life of me, cannot understand why Congress is rolling over...

"All it takes for Evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing" Not sure who said this but it is very true. I do not think this should be taken as a call to arms for instigating the change but rather a call to the citizens to hold Congress,, the judicial and the Executive branches to task for their lack of action in these times.

There is a story, I could have read it here, worth repeating if so, about the Titanic disaster. The ship's owners and designers had so many interventions from government safety inspectors over trivia that they gave up and just complied without arguing. One result was that the life-boat capacity was lower than they wanted originally but it complied with all the rules. This does not excuse the arrogance of the owners and captain in forcing a schedule against expert advice, but without the obstructive regulations the human loss would have been lower.
    Corrections if any, welcome.
