Is there any such thing as altruism?

Altruism: the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others

Is it possible to do anything completely unselfishly?

What you describe always makes me think of Catherine Halsey from The Fountainhead. How initial she wants to feel good about doing good, but Toohey tells her thats wrong, so by the end she has turned into this lifeless thing trying to "do for others, without gaining anything".

    Very depressing.

Not to get technical or anything but does altruism really exist. Humans do a lot of things voluntarily even though they get no material gain from it. Nice people do volunteer work because it makes them feel good, as it should, and that in itself has value. Now, if you lack values and morals, then volunteering your skills to help others wouldn't really give you anything to feel good about, which is why you don't see A-holes voluntarily doing this sort of thing.

Altruism done voluntarily is true altruism. Government - enforced welfare is bogus altruism.
