Are Liberals Happier than Conservatives?

"In a survey of 1,433 people, political conservatives reported being more satisfied with life than liberals. But researchers found another pronounced trend else among conservatives: They were more likely to judge themselves and their circumstances in an overly positive way.
[...]
... liberals were more intense and genuine smilers. “We saw greater activation of the muscles around the eye,” says Wojcik. “That typically indicates more genuine feelings of happiness and enjoyment.” The same held true in non-politician liberals, according to an analysis of the profile photos of liberally and conservatively aligned LinkedIn users." -- http://time.com/3744433/liberals-cons...

Abstract of the research cited above on AAAS Science here:
http://www.sciencemag.org/content/347...

Right wing authoritarians seem self-satisfied:
"Conservatives tend to be married and religious, two traits that correlate to happiness. Conservatives possess an “ideological buffer,” to quote New York University’s Jaime Napier and John Jost, that immunizes them against the world’s depressing inequality. This latest Canadian study goes further, suggesting that a strong sense of order and hierarchy makes people happy -- even when that order and hierarchy appear to disadvantage other people." -- here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/th...

Abstract of that study:
"Although authoritarianism can negatively impact others (e.g., by predicting prejudiced intergroup attitudes), implications for the self are mixed and require clarification. Extending previous research, we examined the association between generalized authoritarianism (GA, indicated by right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation) and subjective well-being (SWB, indicated by positive affect, negative affect, and life satisfaction) by testing simultaneously the general-level association between GA and SWB as well as specific residual associations between GA and SWB components, independent of basic personality dimensions. We observed a significant general-level association between GA and SWB whereby heightened authoritarianism predicted greater SWB. No residual associations were found between specific GA and SWB components. Despite being “bad” for others, generalized authoritarianism may be “good” for the self." -- from Elsevier "Science Direct" here: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/...

I must add a personal footnote from a class in world history in 1967. Progressive Britons complained about the complacency of Labour: "Sod you, Jack, I've got mine." That may be the conservative American view today.

Interesting how authoritarian is always matched with "right wing" cuz in my life I see the democrats or left wing ( but not liberal) as being just as authoritarian equally. Both call for State control of health care, marriage, income, roads, schooling, and economy. You're posted study is lacking a little.

Hey, have fun, it's a beautiful evening outside.

I read through it all. The word for this is "Spin". I am sure I was not the only one that noticed that exactly the same sentences were "Cut and Pasted" between the different studies.

This looks like when you comparison shop on Amazon and under the "customer reviews" you notice that a lot of the comments have been cut and pasted with the same negative comments except one product that is overflowing with wonderfulness. The correct name for this is "Internet Optimization".

"In short, we tend to agree with and thereby validate experts who agree with us. When presented with facts opposed to our commitments, we denigrate the status of the provider. This ties in with another theme: The Big Sort by Bill Bishop. Over the past generation, Americans have come to socialize only with those who agree with them politically. In the 1960 Presidential election, Kennedy won over Nixon by about 1 vote per precinct, and largely, it was just that: a nation mostly divided narrowly near the middle. Now, precincts tend to be overwhelmingly Republican or Democrat." -- http://necessaryfacts.blogspot.com/20...

From my working environment I took away two important lessons. Never assume, and always look at the raw data objectively. These studies and your comments assume there are only two categories when there are actually four. The articles speak for themselves, having been assembled from cutting and pasting selective portions. As far as the studies, they appear to have been hastily assembled in answer to one released by Cambridge several months before that showed the opposite results, and was carried extensively on the news. One does not have to be Sherlock Holm's to see that these studies were probably a political answer to the first. "Show me the Money" ; is the first question I ask in any study, and if it is not disclosed or readily available then to me the study is in question. I could find no information to show who paid for these.

Just reading through your post, I come away with the impression that the conclusion existed before the survey was made, and that spin was introduced to diminish the validity of happiness amongst the conservatives.

Generally, people rated authors as experts when the views coincided with their own. Kahan and his team created three authors and their books. All three had the same high level of academic standing. (Doctorates from major schools.) In every case, two different, opposing views were written for each author and randomly shown to subjects. The topics were gun control, nuclear power plants, and global warming. -- http://necessaryfacts.blogspot.com/20...
