Gowdy is a bulldog and is not interested in politics, the a characteristic that makes him so valuable. Along with his intelligence.

IF (big "if") the GOP (worthless cowards) actually do take the Congress back, I would hope their mantra would be : Investigate, Indict, Convict, Execute.

Gingrich would continue us down the big government path. Before his second term as President ended, he'd have sold us out to the U.N.

I just don't get the tanning thing. Doesn't Boehner know he's getting charges extra to pay the Obamacare surtax on tanning salons?

Have you read S.M. Sitrling's "Change" novels? Distantly related to Ringo's trilogy [which actually is a trilogy]; I don't remember the name of the trilogy but the books are There Will Be Dragons, The Emerald Sea....
Both are useful as well as entertaining, as they take place in societies where there is suddenly a complete drop in the level of technology. In Stirling's, no chemical reaction more complicated than fire will work. It just doesn't.
My complaint about both is that there isn't enough discussion of politics/political theory.

    What is GoodReads?

I agree, but when it comes down to the wire for state level postitions I often dither. I live in a very, very blue state, so I am often faced with compromise in order to keep my 1st and 2nd amendment rights from being fully nullified on a local level. but when voting on a federal level, I do not compromise.

Good book for libertarian reading is the LaNague Federation by F Paul Wilson. Futuristic but not in a mechanical vein, it focuses more on idealogy and the state of governance. May now only be available as "The Complete Lanague (the Lanague Federation Series)" for kindle due to it's length. Wilson is a libertarian from way back and weaves it into his stories beautifully.

I should have added in the above:

I am happy to give you a deserved 'point' for demonstrating that you recognize the positive aspects of Newt, and clearly isolated your dislikes.

I can't go along with West, even though I admire him greatly.

We need another Willie Stark type dynamo. Someone that stirs up the base emotions, and puts the 'fire' back into the Silent Majority. There is nothing wrong with a little Elmer Gantry style political revivalism....

If Obama was selling snake oil, so can we.

I don't disagree that the Republicans need leadership and that Boehner is sorely lacking in that regard, but I will politely disagree that Newt Gingrich is the one to lead the party.

Was Gingrich a great public speaker? Sure. He could and still does run circles around the likes of Boehner. He can not only think on the fly, but he can debate with the best. He's one of the more articulate Republican leaders that has come along in the last 20 years - no disagreement. If you could find someone as articulate as Gingrich without the political baggage, I'd certainly be willing to take a look. Newt, however, has alienated too much of the Party with his establishment comments - similar to Boehner - to unite them or get people behind him. His remarks about Paul Ryan's budget plan offended way too many people (including myself) for him to escape those consequences.

Would he do better than Boehner? Probably, but that isn't saying much. Is he the only one with ideas? Not hardly. He's also far too arrogant and self-centered, but it got Obama elected, so maybe that's not the liability I think it is...

Myself, I'd like to see someone like Allen West. I was really disappointed when he lost re-election down in Florida. I thought he would have been a better pick than Paul Ryan as VP.

I never kid about Newt...I was watching on C Span when the Contract With America was put into action. Seen anything even close to that since?

I don't agree. There had already been warning signs - especially during the caucuses - that exposed Boehner's hostility towards anyone outside the main Republican network.

And you've got to be kidding about Newt. You must have missed his openly hostile remarks about Paul Ryan's budget or the TEA Party. Stick a fork in Gingrich - he's done and good riddance.

I've read the Seven Miracles (US) book. It was incredible. I never realized that stuff about the Chinese. I'll have to check out the other ones - I'm always on the lookout for a good new author. Really enjoyed Tom Clancy, David Weber, Dale Brown, John Ringo and others - both contemporary and futuristic military sci-fi.

    Do you use GoodReads?

If you're interested in those, you might also enjoy Brandon Sanderson's "Way of Kings". It's more fantasy, but it's been a long time since I've read anyone who can weave military philosophy and politics as well.

    Greetings jimmjamesjames,
Yes, that would be fun. I find Mr. Gowdy to be a breath of fresh air. I hope he continues to inspire. I would like to see more politicians that I can believe.
Boehner has not held fast to principles and deserves to be removed. We can do better.
    Respectfully,
    O.A.

Boehner has proven to be the worst Republican House speaker in decades. He spends way too much time in a tanning salon and not enough building bridges to the parties true base (Conservatives of all flavors). For his ineptitude, he should step down ASAP and let the party pull itself back together for the upcoming fights.

The contest for Tom Coburn's replacement in the Senate has already begun.

One of the frontrunners is Congressman Lankford. I voted for one of his opponents, because one of the talking points of his campaign was all about 'working with others'. In other words, the same old Republican compromise in order to advance the Democrat agenda.

Unrelated to the subject but your comments about natural disaster taking out DC made me thing of a book series.

Chris Stewart (now a representative from Utah) was a air force pilot, special forces and base commander in his military career. After that he went writer.

He did a couple of books that I would recommend to anyone here as you will find value to them. (7 miracles that saved America and 7 events that saved the world - note titles may be a word off or something but its enough to find them on line).

He also wrote a series called the great and the terrible. Very good series to me, but not everyone here will like them. First they are very chick flick like in that the story is driven through relationship development. Second they have strong Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) tone to them. If your OK with both of those you will enjoy the series. The first book is a glims into what LDS beliefs would say the pre-earth (before here) life was like. The other 5 take place in the near future and its about the events that lead up to the cleaning out of both parties garbage through, not natural disaster but some man made ones.

They are quite entertaining and his military background shows through in the ways the terrorists attack. Both creative and quite possible.

If interested the book series is the great and the terrible. The first one is called "The Brothers" and it was just OK. Its necessary to fully enjoy the other 5, great story and shows some of Chris Stewart's way of looking at things.

Sorry for the side track, its funny what pops into your head from a simple little phrase.

I'm sure you can find your own YouTube videos, but he makes particularly strong impressions in the Benghazi hearings and his grilling of the HHS secretary regarding the ACA.

Unfortunately, none, and for very simple reasons. The DNC controls which Democrats get funding for election and re-election campaigns, and funding is dictated by how well that person tows the line with their voting. If you don't vote with the hard left, you end up like Gru (Despicable Me) when he applies for a loan to steal the moon: DENIED! This is also why there are no more "blue dog" Democrats: those who were akin to libertarians in that while they supported a more liberal social policy, they also supported more traditional fiscal policy.

We are also now seeing this trickle into the RNC as well, with several high-profile (and disastrous) candidates being backed by RNC money over others simply because they kowtow to the Republican establishment. Both sides play the "good ol' boys" game. It almost makes me wish for a natural disaster to clean out DC so we can start over.
