Yes. Read an interesting series of books by William Dietz called "The Legion of the Damned". Seems criminals convicted and sentenced to die would face execution in the same manner as their victim(s). Of course, in that time, they had a choice of final death or having their brains transplanted into a cyborg brain box and serving in the Legion Etranger of the future. What a delightful thought.
