I know I'm going to catch flack for this.

While I am for individual liberties, I have a very difficult time with the issue of abortion. 55 million dead, innocent, human beings/Americans...why? Self-interest to excuse reckless conduct?

Agreed. However, there is no other rational method that is both medically supportable as well as morally acceptable. There is no easy answer, but an answer is required. The answer that all life from conception (including rape/incest) must be protected is not rational, nor is the proposition that abortion up to the moment of birth. Thus we need something in between. I think that my proposal is rational and supportable.

I'm a Conservative, I'm not the most religious person nor am I puritanical. I'm not saying people shouldn't be able to get abortions. I am saying that it should never be used as a form of birth control. Man and woman copulate...if fertilization occurs only a human child will result..

This is good. I know I disagree agree with you on whether people should be allowed to get abortions, but I definitely agree with this solution for slowing the tide. Social stigma plays a large part in preventing it from happening, and does so within the confines of the free market.

If we look at the stats some interesting patterns emerge. Back in the late 90's the rates were dropping really fast. A strong economy that gives people the ability to see themselves making a better future for themselves seems to be pretty helpful in not just preventing abortion but also in reducing various kinds of unwanted pregnancy. Anyone who wants to prevent abortion should be working on building the kind of world where people choose not to get one, and choose to be more cautious. The problem is not that there is too much freedom and self interest. The problem is that there is not enough. I don't have or want control over people sex lives and choices. I just want folks to be free enough to make the right choice.

individual accountability...social stigma: slut, bastard child, dishonorable man. Have having a child out of wedlock attach two people together like a bear trap. The issue we have is caused by "gray" morality. A more responsible morality would clean up the matter. I think.

If we ended the war on drugs, African Americans wouldn't be worse off economically anymore, and as such would no longer be at a disadvantage for raising kids.

We could always just encourage contraception. Then the issue of abortion wouldn't even come up! :D

The problem with a time threshold is that no matter what point you pick, it's going to be entirely arbitrary with no real rationale behind it.

For example, if you picked 20 weeks as the limit, does a fetus that is 19 weeks, six days, and 23 and 1/2 hours old not have the same same rights as a fetus which is 20 weeks old?

Why not just have machines provide the intercourse as well? An ounce of responsible behavior by either participant would avoid the matter entirely. This country needs a bit more individual accountability.

This is a tough issue for Libertarians. The way that I look at it, no rational person would say that a mass of cells one minute prior to exiting the birth canal is not a baby. Likewise, other than as a matter of faith, nobody would say that the first cell division (2 human cells) would be considered a human being capable of independent life. Thus, there is some point between the two where the cells become a human being which should have it's own independent rights to liberty including life.
Where that point is causes the problem. For those of faith (including myself) it occurs at conception. I can accept that there are others who do not believe as I do, and I respect that. So, how do we find a reasonable accommodation that takes into account both medical reality and faith beliefs of all types?
I believe that it is by establishing an inviolable time threshold - prior to that time the cells are considered just that, and after that time it is a human being with all rights as any other human.
This brings up some legal issues such as the case where the mother is "killed" with a viable baby - current issue in Texas, I think. In such a circumstance I would assign an independent advocate for the baby. This advocate would represent the child and only the child but would follow the wishes of the family and their religious convictions except under extreme circumstances.
    Just my humble thoughts.

I have always been surprised that this has not been made into a racial issue. If I am correct a much higher percentage of black babies are aborted than white babies. If abortion was abolished would we be overwhelmed by more parents who can't afford to care for their children? I have struggled with this issue my whole life AJ. I don't know what the best approach is.
