John Dobson - R.I.P.

I just received an email from a local amateur astronomy group that John Dobson died today.

Dobson was thoroughly a mystic, but he was also a brilliant man and an innovator in the world of amateur astronomy.

I met Dobson at a star party once.
And didn't realize until later (when I looked at the mystical pamphlet he had handed me) whom I had met.

Before this guy's revolutionary design, the average amateur astronomer's telescope probably had a 6 or 8 inch mirror. After...20s and 30s became COMMONPLACE. I looked through a 30" dob in New Mexico a decade ago and the images through the eyepiece looked equivalent to photographs taken at observatories.

We really should meet some time. We're both Amiga fans and amateur astronomers. I had a 10" Meade SCT for a decade. Never had a dob, but certainly was envious of the aperture. What took me an hour to capture on film could be seen instantly in the eyepiece of a big dob.
