"One of the founders of sociology, Emile Durkheim (1858-1917), coined the phrase “collective consciousness.” Durkheim insisted there were “inherent” qualities that existed in society apart from individuals. Exposing his own absurd theory, he went so far as to claim suicide was one of those qualities, as if the “phenomenon” were present beyond any individual choice to end life.
He wrote: “Man is the more vulnerable to self-destruction the more he is detached from any collectivity, that is to say, the more he lives as an egoist.”
In other words, according to Burkheim, the individual who rejects the norms of society must be wrapped up in himself in some morally repugnant way. There are no other alternatives."

The author describes the current day Sociologist teaching that those that deny collectivism and collective consciousness can't exist, even leading to suicide.

Does that mean that Objectivist are doomed?

My washing machine doesn't spin as well as these collectivists. I believe there is a deep seated fear of being responsible for one's self in their kind of thinking...

Indeed... a sense of insecurity perhaps. I do not fear being left to my own resources. I have been contemplating this for some time. I can't really relate because of my upbringing I suppose. I had survival training and practiced all the agriculture, hunting and gathering arts since I could hold a bamboo fishing cane... Those without this type of faith in their own capacity fear being left behind I imagine...

And the individual that is responsible is a direct challenge to their life's ideology, sense of 'rightness' in the world, and their own sense of self worth.
