Where Have All The Heroes Gone?

One can chop down the tall trees―progressive taxation and the regulatory state; one can elevate the trite, vulgar, and valueless―elite-sanctioned modern art, music and literature; or one can make everybody a hero, which makes nobody a hero―the egalitarian glorification of the “common man”; all serve to destroy the concept of the heroic. Notwithstanding a century of such efforts, people still try to elevate athletic, cinematic, and political figures to heroic status, generally undeserved; still flock to movies about heroes drawn from history, comic books, and spy, military, and detective novels; and still cheer for the good guys and hope the bad guys get it in the end. Ignoring the elite’s sneers, they cheer because they desperately need a vision of the good, the moral, and the right, no matter how warped that vision sometimes appears through Hollywood’s lens

They are among us though not readily apparent to those raised on collectivist images.

They are the ones who have learned, as Roark said, 'not to be afraid of the world'.

They will be the role models for our children as they ignore expectations and intimidation and quietly go about creating for their own personal gratification.

I think I know what kind of fiction Iroseland and khaling are looking for, and I have a novel, The Golden Pinnacle, coming out in the next few months, in conventional book form and on e-readers, published by Createspace, the Amazon subsidiary. Look for it, I think you will like it.

Mass media is where the fight begins. If we lose that we lose. That's just how it works. The good news is that we now live in a world where Hollywood's grasp on the means to control the delivery of a message is getting weaker every day. We now live in a world where a unknown but skilled story teller can now be heard. We can publish blogs, and vlogs, and YouTube and self publish books on Amazon. The good news also is that it works. The GaltSpeaking channel on YouTube is probably one of the best things to happen to objectivism in my lifetime. He has managed to be entertaining, while staying on message in a way that has captivated even some of my pretty left leaning friends. Producing entertainment is really really not easy. I have been in the gaming industry on and off for a long time. Yes, there are big piles of money and management involved in producing a game that blows people away. But, the first most important part is having a producer that can take the vision of a fun game and heard the tech and art folks into getting it done. Its a first principle thing again. You cannot make a successful game if you start with a bad idea. So, what do we need to do? Those of us who can need to be producing new media to compete with the crap coming out of Hollywood. Those of us who cannot do this should examine their approach to media. After all life is short, which means there is no time for crappy movies, bad food or nasty beer.

"Literary fiction discards heroes, plot, and straightforward prose in favor of pretentious wordplay, dissections of the inner lives of abhorrent people"
so true. I have been thinking a lot about this lately. I am so tired of a tortured protagonist. that is the only way to "warm" to character. We don't feel he's interesting if he behaves rationally, free from guilt and demons. We can accept he has feelings unless in his grief, he crashes his car into a tree.
I want more novels which capitalize on the creative genius and heroics of everyday people who yearn to live in a free society. These heroes become heroes because they thwart the ruthless, destructive nature of government officials ruled by collectivist ideology.
