Capitalism at work, and it really works.
I know that some of the launch facilities (if not all)were supplied by the government, but they were paid a fee for their use.
SpaceX is next

"But Thursday's launch marked Orbital's debut delivery flight to the space station under its NASA contract. The company plans to launch eight missions by 2016, three of them this year, to deliver 40,000 lbs. (20,000 kg) of supplies to the station. NASA also has a $1.6 billion deal with the Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX for 12 delivery missions to the station, two of which have already flown." - from Space.com via Yahoo News.

I'm beginning to think the term "NASA engineer" is an oxymoron.
There has not really been a killer app for space in the venture world. maybe manufacturing at 0 g (db just said that to me)
The Delta Clipper design that Pournelle pushed was the type of ship used in "Fallen Angels" (big surprise). One of the drool-inspiring aspects of it was a 9 day turnaround time, a semi-trailer of mission control personnel, and a small fraction of the cost of a NASA launch.
I try to imagine the explosion into space that would represent, and "screw everybody" is the nicest phrase I can come up with.
