Horses arouse human emotions. My wife and I have horses, mostly ponies that provide rides for little kids, and occasionally someone tries to tell us how they think we are being cruel. No sense in their minds.

We also drove carriages, about 20 years ago, and can easily say that our carriage horses genuinely preferred driving to riding. It's a relaxing situation, mostly, and the horses enjoyed the "sight-seeing" that was involved.

Where do these "aminal rghits" people (to whom I will not even grant correct spelling) get the idea that we should not make use of animals? Civilization arose in the middle east as men learned how to make use of horses for transportation and warfare. In my opinion anything I can do to keep today's people aware of the reality of horses is important.

I frequently get the question, "Are those ponies REAL? I thought ponies were just in stories!" "Come over here," I say, "and touch the pony." (Evidence of the senses.) "He is really real. Why would you think he isn't?"

Our ponies are generally quite intelligent, and seem to understand very well how to provide rides at a birthday party. They know they are to be on good behavior, and not to do anything that would hurt the children, even if offered candy.

Thank your local pony-ride or carriage person. It's not a high-paying job, but it is enjoyable (for both man and beast, if done right) and is certainly needed.

Please note that the newly crowned de Blasio is more concerned about satisfying the Teamster union thugs. All the driver must be members of the Teamsters. the horses get fired but the teamster drivers keep their jobs, assuming they want to be a taxi driver. The animal rights wackos have been after this for decades. In the rare event when a horse and carriage has a mishap the hand wringing starts at the NYT, CNN and at Rockefeller center on NBC/methNBC - with all their feigned outraged - we have to do something to protect all animals.... then Katie Curic sneaks off to go fox hunting in the Adirondacks Not that i have anything against fox hunting, it is great fun and great tradition. But these people are hypocrites. It is all about emotion, not reason and of course the pay back to the union hacks at the top. The actual members of the teamsters who actually love driving the horse drawn carriages, they're expendable too. This is another case of people who know nothing about anything other than statist, throat crushing control dictating outcomes.

Having spent a good deal of time with horses in my youth I can back up the claim that they like doing their job. They do not want to be out in a field running wild. Horses like people, unless you treat them badly. They like doing whatever it is you teach them to do.

Unlike a lot of these large government people they enjoy being of service and fulfilling a role in life. The union will take that from the horse, they all ready have from every member.

The whole position is that horses that are "relieved" from whatever activity the animal rights activists are protesting will lead idyllic, better lives. Who is going to pay for those horses to live in green pastures? Are they out of their minds? The bulk of those horses would get put down, shipped to a different country and turned into food, or dumped into a lousy home with a miserable existence. And the carriage drivers? They have their business taken away by someone else's misguided whim? Disgusting.

I find this so sad, deBlasio so mad!! And we thought Bloomberg was bad?? Tourists
have always loved taking the carriages through Central Park (as we also!). Will the
horses be shipped to China, slaughtered and
churned into dog/cat food? How awful - Yep - the lunatics have left the asylums....

Does any remember Woody Allen's movie "Bananas"? Where the new government made an annoucement that its first law is that everyone will change their underwear every hour, on the hour. And they'll wear it on the outside, so that it can be checked. Are we there yet?

Way to go NY voters! Why is always the NY Mayor's job to ban ban ban ban so many things? Why not eliminate some laws or lift restrictions or kill some fees or lower taxes or any number of useful moves? And people vote this crap in...repeatedly.

They like - no, NEED - to be led. By the nose, with a ring, IMO. Shows how the herd mentality can take over when you have too many people bunched in together...

The guy has a weird angle playing somehwere... What's the "Pull"? Who's getting the payola for this idiocy? Either he's been bought by PETA or has a friend who has a fleet of antique cars standing to make bank, or maybe he is blind to what an attraction these carriages are (Hell, I like doing the ride when I'm in the City...)... If he thinks those horses are abused, it sure shows he's no horseman.

Plus - seen a horse break a 100 year old linkage, go Wide Open Throttle and run people down? This thing is a lawsuit in the making.

Glad I live about as far as possible from that nutjob and what he's turning the city into...

I saw that story the other day.
I asked myself, "how many injury-inducing car accidents are there in NYC each day? How many car related deaths?"

New York is setting the standard of how much the government can control individuals and businesses for the "good" whether real or emotional. DeBlasio's term is going to be a test bed for the lib agenda and how far they can push it. I grew up in rural upstate New York and love the area. I'm now in Atlanta starting a tech business and watched all NY's ads about bringing your business to the state. I went and checked it out and found #1 the rural areas where companies have been leaving and jobs are limited are still left out of the equation which is geared towards the urban areas. #2 Having lived there, the state government has never been business friendly and I would never trust them to be nothing more than a hinderance. It's a shame because I think I could do a lot of good to help the town I grew up in.

NYC is about to find out what electing this idiot gets them. Can't imagine what he is going to do in the future to further restrict the citizens of the city. Probably more taxes and foolishness. Look for NYC to be quite empty by the time he leaves office, or dies. What an idiot.

"Malone also disputed claims that horses are overworked, saying that all horses get at least five weeks of vacation time, and some get up to six months."

That's more vacation than I get. I wonder if they get free healthcare too! Oh the equinity of it all!

Horses have been man's copanion for time immemorial. They are beasts of burden and thrive in being so. There is no doubt, as illustrated by di Blasio that liberalism is a mental disorder. As to Mackinac, being originally from Michigan, I visited there fairly often. The Grand hotel has the largest veranda and claims to be the largest all wood structure in the USA. It is completely bug free (thanks to chemicals) and car free. Beautiful scenery and summer climate. Great place for a relaxing vacation.

Help me with this, ok, as I commented at that site... Where did anyone of the "activists" provide ANY data or studies to prove that the horses were ACTUALLY "suffering" from their "fate" on the streets? Lung cancer from inhaling exhaust... any more than sidewalk pedestrians might? Hoof damage, ankle or leg damage from that "nasty pavement"?

No studies, no data => no basis for argument.

Friends, aren't horses as good as people? How dare we patronize them by petting them? People do work, it is true, but horses should not have to be so demeaned as to perform manual labor. De Blasio is a right-thinking man, in my humble opinion. He wants to chase businesses out of New York. So...why not begin with the horsies?
