Atlas Shrugged Dream Cast, Revisited

Here I return to an earlier theme: what actors, among the greatest anyone could name, would make the best Atlas Shrugged cast? And by the way: price no object.

So here are my suggestions:

Dagny Taggart: Tilda Swinton. (She'd need a lot of make-up to look as young as she did in "The Chronicles of Narnia," but she could manage it.)

Henry Rearden: Daniel Craig (Or if we had done it a lot earlier, Laurence Harvey)

John Galt: Pierce Brosnan

Francisco d'Anconia: Antonio Banderas

Ragnar Danneskjöld: Dolph Lundgren (or perhaps Arnold Schwarzenegger)

Lillian Rearden: Christina Ricci

Mother Rearden: Angela Lansbury

Hugh Akston: Patrick Stewart

Midas Mulligan: Bruce Greenwood

Robert Stadler: Kurtwood Smith

Floyd Ferris: Peter Weller

Jim Taggart: Danny DeVito

Any other ideas?

The thing is, you have to remember people's age. I love the idea of Antonio as Francisco, for example, but I expect he's too old now. Same with Sigourney.

Because the politician doesn't hold with the position of the character? Or have you some other reason?

My biggest problem with that list above: Sigourney Weaver as Mother Rearden? I'd sooner cast Sigourney Weaver as Kay Ludlow Danneskjöld. And give her a more prominent role to play.

I love the idea of Patrick Stewart and Donald Sutherland. And yes, Natalie Portman is who I was going to suggest. Or Keira Knightly.

And it just occurred to me:

Benedict Cumberbatch as John Galt--or as Ragnar Danneskjöld

    Anthony Hopkins as Hugh Akston

If we were casting this back in the Golden Age of Hollywood, I would have cast Edward G. Robinson as Mr. Thompson. And:

    Lauren Bacall as Dagny Taggart
    Humphrey Bogart as Henry Rearden
    Fred MacMurray as Jim Taggart
Shirley MacLaine as Cherryl Brooks Taggart
    Robert Mitchum as Cuffy Meigs
    Otto Krueger as Robert Stadler
    Ray Collins as Hugh Akston
    Burt Lancaster as Ragnar Danneskjöld
    Kirk Douglas as John Galt
    Ricardo Montalbán as Francisco d'Anconia

Anotonio Banderas is perfect for Francisco. I thinnk he's as sexy as Francisco, and that's saying a lot.

Come to think of it...he wasn't such a cold fish when he pulled Dagny Taggart out of that plane crash. He was smiling like one having something to smile about.

I wanted to have some place for Danny DeVito to appear. Maybe...

    Tinky Holloway.

Or how about Mister Thompson himself?

Danny DeVito? If he is Jim Taggart, and Dagny is his sister, then Dagny will have to be Rhea Perlman!

I don't think Galt has to be a cold fish. What you are describing as cold, and Rand as well, to me is a man who is 100% sure of his stance. But I also think he is a man who loves life and is full of joy. I think Polaha was perfect at showing that.

I had forgotten just how good Morena Baccarin was as Queen Anna in "V". She played the queen as a "suit," not as a military leader. That's what was so good about that. Yes, she would make an excellent Dagny, especially: "There is one thing you can do for me, and you'd better do it: keep your Washington boys off."

As to Robert Stadler, why not a different Sutherland: Kiefer Sutherland?

Now considering the actors who portrayed Baron Danglars, let Comte de Morcerf, and M. Gérard de Villefort: could you see any of them in this production? I'm thinking of Jim as a type of Danglars, Robert Stadler as a type of Morcerf ("Fernand"), and Floyd Ferris as a type of Villefort.

I didn't see that particular edition. So he played the Count? Yes, anyone who could handle the Count, can handle this role.
