Rand actual supported Christmas, as a voluntary endeavor to gift whom you wanted. There is no contradiction for one to allow others their own path, as long as voluntary.

Yes she would have. Not everyone here is objectivist, they just like to argue with objectivists.

Not so fast here, she would not have imposed her will on others, she just would not have been the one to instigate that particular type of show. I do not see her as having been the type to object to others behavior as long as they did not make her sing it.

I don't think she would support the gov't opposing or tacitly endorsing a religion.

No, she wouldn't, in fact she would oppose it. I meant that she would not instigate it on her own. PhilN seemed the think because she was an atheist she would approve of their decision and would have pushed that no songs be sung. I think that her leanings were to have no involvement and that it would be up to the individual, but not compelled either way by the state.

Know christ… participate in the crusades, the inquisition. Meet new people and torture/kill them.

Oh wait. You were making a joke, right?

I was waiting for someone to mention it, and you walked right on in. Thanks. No, I'm not talking historical Christianity from the Middle Ages & Renaissance. (that's also a favorite argument among many muslims I've engaged with since 1997) I'm referring to what Jesus Christ himself preached.

How did Paul convert people over to Jesus? I'm not going to spoon feed anyone here, most are smart enough to know where they can find the answer.

By the way, speaking of the infamous Spanish Inquisition, where did the Spaniards get the idea/inspiration for employing the tactics of torture in order to get people to convert? Was it from the Bible? Nope (ok, here's some spoon feeding) It was from the 700 year muslim occupation of Spain.

Neither the Spaniards nor the English were practicing the true doctrine of Christianity at that time in Western history.

That's why the Pilgrims suffered hell before finally settling foot in North America~they wanted to worship the true Christian faith w/o being threatened by the Establishment to convert from either Catholicism to Protestantism & vice versa.

You mention the Crusades. (another favorite muslim argument) How much do you know about them? Why were the Crusades necessary? I'll bet you believe it was because those mean, greedy, bloodthirsty Christians were out to slaughter those peaceful, life loving, non-threatening muslims who've been in the land since BEFORE the Jews right? If that is the case, then you are lost in the confusion of propaganda. My time spent trying to convince of it otherwise is futile. Go on, believe the lie of what the MSM tells you, but I am with the truth.

How much do you know about Mohammed? Who was the first muslim? If you don't know the answer to that question, you're not ready for the truth.

Oh, I get it. It's not the religion itself that's evil. It's just all the people acting in the name of the religion.

          Well, I feel MUCH better.

And did you know that Stalin wasn't such a bad guy because he didn't PERSONALLY kill all those millions of people?

I don't have much use for religion. Overall, I think it's been a significant impediment to rational thought. I mean, if you can be placed under house arrest for asserting that the earth revolves around the sun, rather than vice versa, where's the rational thought in religion? The correct answer is: There is none.

At best, religion is a benign philosophy or a boogie-man for the least intelligent in society ("You better not do THAT! God's watching!!") At worst, it's a disruptive force that justifies widespread chaos and stupidity.

"At the meeting, administrators were quick to say they were sorry to anyone they offended. 'I apologize for that — it's the last thing anybody intended'....".
Um... BULLSHIT. The waters are being tested, people!!!.

I'm always amazed when stuff like this happens about how many pumpkin heads this idea has to pass thru and be accepted by to actually implement and pull the whole thing off at show time? These songs are practiced for weeks in advance, in the classrooms/the auditorium (gym, what have you), others, besides their own teachers, had to have HEARD this prior to the performance....and still the show went on. Absolutely amazing!

Like Nazi Germany, they go for the kids. They did sing Obama songs, actually. They teach the kids to disrespect parents and try to filter out any Christian religion, giving them only peer support and love of government. The push nature worship, which is Gaia worship, a temporary fix until full blow state worship can take place. Get your kids out of public schools.
They will tell you that your are evil for doing so, which means you are doing the right thing.

A song is a song, and the words should be song as written. Objectivists do not force their values on others. Ayn Rand had no problems with Christmas. If you use force to change the words on one song, where does that end. It is wrong for anyone to use force to validate their views.

If you really love your kids you will get them out of the government indoctrination system posing as schools and into a private school where they are allowed to TEACH.

Yep, and the actual response is over ten years old...

        http://www.plusaf.com/lessons/norights.h...

and I copied it from a prior source!

Some jerk got it into their head that such "offensive words" should be Bowlderized out of the song and this is what happens.

It's a beautiful song. I love it and I'm an atheist, for whatever that anecdotal data carries with it.

This PC shit has gone WAY too far.

I mostly agree with you with the exception of Spandex regulation. Spandex is a privilege, not a right. :-)
Sorry, I used to work at a ski area, and still get occasional spandex flashbacks; some good, mostly not. lol

Actually I'm always somewhat surprised as the songs that they sing at the "Winter Concert" at our public high school in SE Pennsylvania. Some are what one might call "winter songs" or more secular Christmas songs like Frosty the Snowman or Jingle Bells. However many are religious songs whether Christmas carols or traditional Jewish songs for Hanukah. Let's face it, regardless of one's belief vis a vis religion, some of the most beautiful art, including music, created over the last 1000 years has been religious in nature. To me there is nothing Objective about trying to remove all of this from every aspect of public life. In fact, that is exactly what the Communists tried to do in AR's birthplace - turning churches into feed silos etc.

I have to agree: all a silly reflection on the school teacher whose concrete-bound mentality prevented her from perceiving the very many wider abstractions here.

Why do we have holidays at all? I mean, OK, what is special about solstice or equinox? Why not celebrate whole Radians every 57.2957 days? Or at least why not have Sexigesimal Aspect Day every 60 days, six times through the year, shifting for the sidereal calendar?

If you want to have a Winter Festival, that is fine and dandy - and we have a lot of winter songs with no religious content - like "Winter Wonderland."

In my elementary school, we used to sing "Here We Go A-wassailing" which was always explained as a SPRING song ("... among the leaves so green...") before New Years was set to January 1.
