I heard an interesting take this morning on this entire situation.
The Black community is outraged at all the "white people."
BUT....
We have a Black President, had two Black Attorney Generals, an Iranian Chief of Staff, a Black Woman Mayor of Baltimore, a Black Baltimore Police chief, a Black Baltimore Police Commissioner and somehow this is the fault of the white people?
It's called hate, woodlema. Hate and stupidity. The same thing happened to Detroit, starting in the 60s. First the riots. Then white flight. Then the first of an endless succession of corrupt Democrat mayors, bleeding the city dry. In the 70s, Mayor Young told "whitey to get out", and we did, taking our money with us. That's what started the death spiral, and what really pissed off the blacks. They wanted us out, but not our money. So, now whenever anything goes wrong in the D, it's whitey's fault, because we took our money out of the city.
I happen to live here, and I can tell you that only a handful of feeble-minded locals were incited by outside "community organizing" entities. The local gangs were actually trying to stop the violence and destruction of property. Very few here think this is a white vs. black issue at root because we all know that the issue is profiling, surveillance, and the tyranny of government (primarily black government here). Give the original, local, peaceful, protestors some credit- they really do recognize that liberal policies have failed them and relegated them to the status of herd of animals kept under control with terrible educations and welfare checks, while real opportunities to rise out of poverty are shipped out of their neighborhoods.
Shame on any of us who believe the liberal media. The media, which, by the way, is intentionally spinning this out of context to portray the locals as idiots who want to destroy their own city because they are uncivilized anarchists or because they are the ignorant pawns of liberal policies. I’m sure that Obama is happy about the spin. It’s up to the rest of us to see through the spin and recognize that it is just one more cog in the engine driving us toward a welfare/police state.
hey wonk. have any links to back up your points? we're are not getting a good journalistic take on this. Most of us are not from the area. we need context
My first impressions came while I was at the liquor store last night talking to and listening in on the 3-4 black customers and the 2 Indians (I was the only white customer)... To a person, all were more upset about the "invasion" of the city and the funeral and the disrespect of the family than anything else.
Here is an objective editorial from the Baltimore Sun ("Why Freddie Ran") that gives an "explanation", not "excuses": http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion... -- with a link to a calm and measured press conference by the black Baltimore police commissioner, Anthony Batts. Note his reference to peaceful protests and then to a small "splinter" group of agitators who shifted into violence and destruction, and the professional way officers were handling the situation.
Note again that were it not for the war on drugs, Freddie's rap sheet would be trivial. Populations herded into enclaves of utter poverty and hopelessness by definition lack the intellectual resources to think and work their way out of such misery. They are like children who lack the knowledge to escape from the trap into which previous history and welfare policies have thrust them.
Blaming them and thus justifying depriving them of basic rights is immoral and counterproductive. It's the kind of rationalization that justifies genocides. Let's not descend into that kind of thinking by writing them all off as "thugs". Humans do what they have to do to survive, sometimes in terribly distorted ways when they lack the philosophical wisdoms we take for granted.
I love your careful analysis. . the sad situation in which Freddie found himself may well have made his death a kind of relief, and he -- according to reports during the night tonight -- may have kicked his way there in the back of that van. . very sad situation, involving outside agitators and youngsters with no hope but drugs and drug selling. -- j
Thanks, John. Indeed, very sad. I see where sometimes a "rough ride" is deliberately inflicted on van occupants who are not strapped in. We don't know if that's what happened here.
Incidentally, North Avenue (and slightly south towards Johns Hopkins (where Ben Carson performed miraculous neurosurgery)) is the most violent, drug-infested, area in all of Baltimore. The plan to begin a "peaceful" protest involving hordes of out-of-towners on that street was very carefully orchestrated for maximum violence involving drugged up locals.
Ben Carson is likely shitting a brick as the street 9 blocks north of "his" Johns Hopkins became ground zero for a manufactured martial law scenario.
Do not be surprised when Ben Carson is "mysteriously" linked to all of this in the media.
Khaling, if you saw the unending Fox news coverage tonight, Giraldo was talking to a big black guy spouting all the usual things, but noticeably, there was a big black dude in a white had, silk suit and tie, standing next to him. It all screamed "Nation of Islam". This whole thing was manufactured, young thugs goaded to do stuff with tales of free stuff, and getting back at "the man".
Well let's wait and see what kind of fesses dribbles from his mouth.
I am willing to bet he will not talk about Freddie Grey's extensive criminal record, or that Freddie, crashed his bicycle, and cops often see people just go limp to make dragging them to the car harder...so his "inability" to move was about normal for what cops see every day.
No reason at all to think he was really hurt, especially since in his criminal past he was guilty of lying to police.
As long as working white people continue to produce, pay taxes and support these animals (willingly or otherwise), it is the fault of the white people. Stop feeding the cockroaches and you won't have a cockroach problem.
I think we have learned going black is not the answer. The answer lies within the content of ones character and the difference between people who only lookout for themselves and their political agenda and those doing what is right for our country. Ayn Rand looks smarter with each passing day on her ability to forecast the future
You have identified the illogic of race baiting, eventually you get what you want, the sh@t hits the fan, and you have no one to blame, so you go back to the well and look really, really, stupid.
Listen again please. She is saying that BECAUSE she gave maximum freedom to the peaceful protest, she (the word that is missing is "inadvertently") gave freedom to the destroyers.
I listened carefully to her entire speech, and this is what I took away from it: when you try to make room for an emotionally distraught community to gather in peaceful assembly and express their feelings and opinions, you also open the door for thugs to abuse the security restraints to destroy and loot. I didn't hear anything like an invitation to riot, loot, or destroy, as has been depicted in the media. Maybe she could have spoken a little more at length, or promised accountability for anyone caught doing the destructive actions, but most of the time these press speeches are somewhat extemporaneous (maybe the Prez should have loaned her his teleprompter). Judge not, I always have to remind myself.
The governor of Maryland has also taken flak for not immediately sending in the National Guard, but there is a hierarchy of authority, and he wanted to give the mayor a chance to get things under control. Once it was clear to the mayor that things weren't going to calm down easily, she called the governor for the Guard, and he immediately responded.
Liberal governance has pretty much destroyed the moral social structures in Maryland, and we're seeing the result. Both the mayor and the governor are new in their positions, so let's see how they handle the planning for trying to correct the mess.
So true. Emigration from the US is picking up speed. Several thousand per year, but of the best people, vs the (mostly) trash that is coming in. Would like to see more data and stories on this subject posted here - where to run, what are the options?
I read another article where they were trying to excuse this tactic. The idea was that really, overall, there was minimal property damage, there were 34 arrests and the goal was to de-escalate. The analogy was sometimes punching a punching bag takes away the anger (referring to the recent mysterious death of a man last week and the subsequent suspensions of several officers). I must say, I am very angry that law abiding citizens were corralled and thugs allowed "space." I also do not live in a major city, so there is definitely history enough to have good ideas on how to "handle" these kinds of rumbles. Ultimately, this was not home-grown. This was a manufactured protest from out of towners. THAT needs to be squelched. THAT is the root of many problems stemming from Occupiers of 2012. If I were the mayor-I'd want to know where that money came from. If I was a Baltimore citizen I'd want to know if those same groups gave money to the mayor's campaign. This is easy journalism to do. will anyone take it on? probably not. Our journalism today is a bunch of Op-eds. Facts not required, digging deeper to get a great story? not so much
I actually live in a suburb, but I work just outside the beltway. A mall (Security Square Mall) 5 minutes away was identified as one of the next targets for protests. The mall was closed today, as was the SSA, Northrop Grumman, Best Buy, all restaurants in the vicinity of the mall, and countless other businesses. As I listened to helicopters flying overhead while at work, I thought, "this is all crap exacerbated by social media threats". I drove out to the closed Best Buy (which had related issues yesterday), and took my lunch there while watching the mall for signs of violence. I had a nice 15 minute nap before being called back for a meeting.
I guess I'm not close enough to the violence inciters to feel the pain. My wife's best friend, Heather can't get into or out of the city for work, but I hope this bullshit ends soon so that people can get back to their lives.
Conspiracy or not, some of us make a living by busting our butts. I hope this isn't the beginning of an exercise of executive orders by the big O cheese.
You'd sue a city for allowing a protest incited to violence by outside invaders with an agenda for maximum violence and political pressure?
This had nothing to do with Baltimore or Freddie Gray. It was intended to be on the national stage. Take your insurance money and rebuild or move.
If you listen to the clip again, you'll see that the mayor was saying that BECAUSE she gave maximum freedom to the peaceful protest, she (the word that is missing is "inadvertently") gave freedom to the destroyers.
(The inner harbor is within a mile of Camden Yards (baseball- Orioles) and a couple of miles of M and T Bank Stadium (Ravens- football), not to mention the University of Maryland, the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, all of these museums: https://www.google.com/maps/search/balti...)
No one in Baltimore wants these agitators in town, much less the National Guard.
I'm not much for conspiracy theories, but Baltimore would be a prime location for Marshial Law games given its vicinity to so many 3 letter agencies. So much so that an abject refutation of the idea has been explicitly announced: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2...
One thing is absolutely clear... Baltimore residents did not initiate this insanity.
OK, time for an asylum story... A inspection comes to an asylum and sees that the inmates are running around, grinning, laughing, very happy. One of the inspectors grabs an inmate a queries him on the reasons for such gaiety. Excitedly, he says - "the management has been really good to us - they've built us a pool; we swim in it, we dive in it, it's great! And they tell us that if we behave ourselves, they'll even put water in it!"
IF the protesters had jobs they wouldn't be protesters would they. the problem is so deep as it goes back several generations of the government interfering with the education of the youth. the politicians like this mayor are as uneducated as the protesters. they like their jobs and do not want to make waves. will you be surprised when these protests or actual riots start popping up all over the country; you shouldn't be. the number of people not working mostly by choice since the government gives them money not to work is out numbering those who do work so they have nothing better to do with their time so they join the rioter activists because they know they will not be penalized i.e. arrested. at the conclusion of Leonard Peikoff's book the DIM he suggests we have about 40 years before we die as a nation, i basically told him i am of the opinion we have 20 years he did not disagree. I am not so sure we have 20 years.
I think there is a major error in considering liberal == uneducated. Most of the well-educated and brilliant intellectuals I know are very liberal. So I think that it would be equally possible that the mayor be well educated and still have made the decisions she did. (I do not know her educational background one way or another.)
well, Jan, people pick on "military intelligence" and I was military for 28 years, so maybe something else is up there at the top of the list. . besides jumbo shrimp and D.C. leadership! -- j
Jan, I would respectfully disagree with the claim that well-educated and brilliant intellectuals are liberal (or some are liberal). Analyze their education and intellectual ability. Are they simply well read in certain areas? Perhaps, but that is not a complete, rounded education. How good are their reasoning and logical skills? Have they been repeating the same dogmas that go unquestioned in their world – global warming, terrorism comes from poverty, minorities are oppressed, etc.? Quite a few academia types would never even allow themselves to question those, and other, postulates of their world. Meanwhile, they live off the government graft and would often be totally incapable of being self-sufficient and truly earning their living. Ability to quote Marx and knowing art history does not make one an intellectual if they are incapable of independent thought, logic and reason. In my personal experience, everyone that I’ve ever known from the Liberal/Progressive/socialist side has been either an adolescent (mentally) who believes that things will just happen because one’s wish is good, or they are parasites that suck on the socialist tit because it’s good for them, and damn all others.
I only wish it were so! It would make it a lot easier for my world view. Alas, I am surrounded by graduates of highly reputed technical colleges (Cal Tech, Harvey Mudd) who can quote Shakespeare, recite Gilbert and Sullivan, are incredibly knowledgeable about history (ancient and modern), have well developed skills in logic and rhetoric, have productive jobs...and are earnestly committed to the liberal philosophy.
Hello Jan, But, they do not see the contradictions? It sounds as if they are well educated, but not wise.. they lack critical thinking skills? A hard drive on a computer contains a wealth of information, but with a faulty CPU only nonsense can come of it... Regards, O.A.
The existence of many well-educated and intelligent liberals is what I am substantiating.
I am not of the opinion that their 'wisdom' is lacking, but perhaps that their 'reality' is missing. These are all people who have been raised in an affluent urban environment.
They really mean that the poor should be supported and that the EPA is right about everything - and they are willing to give their own efforts and money to endorse this. (But they are also willing to vote to take my money for those purposes too.) These people really mean it.
Indeed. If one is inclined to believe government propaganda and without questioning or searching for alternatives one is a believer and mean what they say. I would call that misguided... or as you say missing "reality."
Jan, I can only speak for my own experience, which overwhelmingly indicates that the afluent, urban liberals are much more generous with other people's money than with their own. Not so?
I would not say "more generous" - because they are willing to spend their own money - but "as generous" - because obviously, if I came to my senses, I would agree with their decision. It bothers me that in all other respects they are such great people - friends of mine, in some cases. We each think the other is (as OA says) 'misguided'.
I think that my philosophy will stand the test of time and travail much better than theirs will, though, so perhaps some day they will modify their world view.
And I have also observed more than once how a progressive/socialist, when put in a position of actually earning a living with a direct connection between work and pay, quickly becomes a capitalist! Very much like adolescents when asked for donations - very generous, as long as the donation is done by the parents. I have taught my kids out of the "donation guilt" very early in their lives by supporting all their school donation drives with their money. The actual amount never exceeded zero.
The older one is 15 and has no socialist bones in him at all (except for the socialist cartilage of sucking off his parents...). But he is not polluted with "donation guilt" at all. The younger one is 10 and once in a while the peer pressure takes effect, at which times I remind her that money from her piggy back are a very good source... and they remain there. I have no TV, partly home school, minimize outside pollution and try to make them earn everything and take them shooting as often as I can. We'll see how long it'll last. I can hope for the best, that's about all I can do.
Jan, I think that people who achieve financial comfort let themselves stray from the rigor which got them there, taking $$-comfort for granted. when they look around, they think compassionately and feel generous towards those who haven't "been so lucky" (forgetting the rigor) and, sloppily, think that others should do the same. . then, they slur their logic and forget that government is force ... so, others should (be required to) do the same. that is, the comfort-enjoyers get lazy. . it's a part of the elitist self-righteousness which they never acknowledge, but always enjoy.
it's a slippery slope . . . and the reason that my mom's and dad's votes cancelled one another, almost all the time. -- j
Well! Here we are again! Give a Democrat enough room to do something completely idiotic and they will not fail to perform!! Stupid is as stupid does and this mayoral bozo is the epitome of stupid.....
What's worse though is when you vote for your inferiors to rule you because of a letter in brackets after their name, because they are good looking, and sometimes even because of the color of their eyes.
Yah, that's what I had written, then I changed it to eyes. Have you ever watched his eyes when he's upset? They tell the whole story about the man, he's just used to getting his way without argument.
Just talking about that yesterday actually... I live in a rural county area of Northern California... 14% of the population of our little enclave are military veterans, compared to about 3% in the neighboring urban area, seems like every street has a police lieutenant+ and/or local city/county official of some type living on it, and the vast majority not only have "a" gun, but most have many firearms. I even have one of those "celebrate diversity" stickers on the back of my truck with 30 different kinds of firearms depicted.
We don't have those problems here because it wouldn't get very far... the looters & thugs definitely are not interested in attempting that in a populace that can certainly fight back with much, much more firepower.
Watching the results of her leadership live, right now...the results are disgusting on several levels. Protection of an individual's life and property are not a priority.
I agree, especially with your latter statement. And I may be wrong, but except in liberal enclaves where guns are illegal, I thought you could use deadly force to protect your property? You just can't use it "after the fact", i.e., the guy is hightailing it out of there and no longer a threat.
I once heard a (possible urban myth) about a cop telling a homeowner who had a dead perp on his front porch, with a nod and a wink: "Drag him back in the house before anyone else gets here"...
No. Under current law you can only shoot if you believe your life is in danger. And in a non-"Stand Your Ground" state that cop's advice would be correct: the law assumes that a home burglary threatens your life, while (say) torching your empty car parked in front would not.
when Jefferson's "life, liberty and property" was changed to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," there was a significant change in the future. -- j
Just watching this mayor on television tells me she is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Black President, 2 black attorney generals, a black chief of police should remind us that the liberal agenda is failing us. Simply going black is not the answer. It should also remind us that it is not about the color of our skin but the content of our character and our individual philosophy about life politically and morally. The liberal leftist agenda is destroying America from within.
I saw another video where she said she did not say that, she said they were taking her words out of context. Is it possible she just made a gross blunder? I think her heart is actually in the right place, her fault is that she's a politician and occasionally makes stupid statements.
Watching the video at the link, Mr. Jason Downs had the best message, more leaders need to follow his lead, precise, to the point, and short. The minister also had a good message but came across too much as a just another speech, and way too long for any of the thugs to understand. The solution to stop these riots and property destruction will have to come from the black leaders. Where are they? It's unfortunate there are not enough of them willing to take a stand and to make a difference. The only one's that are willing are the agitators, the Sharpton's and his followers.
They are trying to control this problem using our current administrations methods that are proven every day that they just don't work. Criminals need to be held accountable for their crimes, and that's the only thing that will resolve the crime. If there were no crime, there would be limited use for the police. It's almost funny how we pay them to do a job, them we tell them not to do it. Has anyone felt that these riots seems to have increase somewhat since we hired this president, or is it just that the media reports more of it?
the "mainstream media" make a big deal out of riots because they see them as justified, and Fox makes a big deal out of them because the see them as unjustified. . big deals all around. -- j
"...did our very best to de-escalate;" How'd that work out for you Madam Mayor? Talk about a lack of judgment! It's pretty obvious that she can't tell the difference between the exercise of free speech and the willful allowance of rioting.
This is a pure case of ideology over governing. This is clearly I'm black they are black and we are oppressed. If ANY minority believes that they are oppressed it is "self oppression". All people need to do is read, research and educate themselves. And the BS that the opportunity doesn't exist is just BS. It is those that say they are oppressed who need to get up off their lazy asses and do something. Apply for the programs that will give them an education so they can remove themselves from the Gov't plantation. After all the only difference today is who owns that plantation.
There is a poetic justice to this happening in Baltimore... Obama wasted no time dispatching the White House staff & cabinet to 'feel the pain' in Ferguson, which you know they regarded as backward flyover country and expected a bunch of redneck hicks... and treated them as such...
Now the shoe is on the other foot... 40 miles from DC, in the bastion of leftist politics, black mayor, black police chief, and a 30 minute drive from the White House. Why isn't Holter & Al Sharpton flocking out there to stand up to 'oppression' of the black folk? They haven't even posted the picture of the cops involved on TV? (Code-word for that is that they were probably all black and doesn't fit the narrative). The Ferguson cop's face was plastered everywhere nationwide within hours and he will never work again...
The government is now reaping the results of what they have sowed- the entitlement philosophy that they have given to the black culture. Give us what we want, OR we will riot. I am happy I dont live there, but unfortunately a lot of places in this country are infected with this now.
So -- will the insurance companies paying the claims for the damages wrought by the rioters subrogate against the city on the grounds of dereliction of duty to protect the properties?
I think that is the proper course of action. And the insurance company claims should include the phrase, "Due to deliberate action on the part of the mayor..."
Not to belittle the shame of someone fatally injured in police custody (I have no idea what happened to the guy), I agree with AJAshinoff... she just bought the cost of the damages to all those businesses, homes, and personal property on behalf of the taxpayers of the City of Baltimore.
Here's the reality, the business owners are going to collect insurance, the insurance companies will seek recompense from the city (and rightfully so), and those businesses will NEVER rebuild.
It was the worst possible choice of words. Whether she meant them as they sounded, or not, she is no longer qualified to serve as Mayor. She should resign now, and let a Mayor come in from the outside. And I've got just the guy...
Ick, I have to go there a lot on business, not a lot of redeeming qualities. Was just there last week, reminds me of Chicago in many ways, cold, cloudy, dreary, mobbed-up, corrupt.
Another interesting little tidbit: For any who watched the Firewall (Bill Whittle) episode about gun-happy America, Baltimore is on the list of most violent cities in the US...
Isn't it ironic how mostly black cities like Baltimore, having a black mayor, black police chief, and mostly black officers seem to have the most frustration against their white minority and against the law? Does this make any sense?
I live in an white area, white mayor, white police and mostly white officers. We don't seem to have racial issues with our black minority, we are all are just part of the community.
The issues I see have nothing whatsoever to do with race. I can understand the frustration of the people. If they would start electing people that can bring together a community rather than tearing it apart maybe things will improve. There is no excuse for looting and the more they get away with the more they will do.
Where else in society do we see the entitlement and oppression mentality preached (very literally) the most? Black communities. Rabble-rousers like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and others make their living based on racial animus and fear-mongering. Do you see anything remotely like it in any other sector of society? No.
There is no such thing as an African American. Or a Chinese American. Or a Caucasian. We're all just Americans. End of Story. As soon as people stop referring to themselves by their skin color, ethnic heritage (or lack of it), etc. the better off this nation will be.
Damn (I really meant Darn), you mean I can't call myself a German American anymore?
Some time ago I actually made up a badge to wear that said, "German American, Racist Bitch, Terrorist, MOB, A--hole (spelled out however), Combat Veteran and Proud of It!!!" I wore it proudly after some of our politicians referred to me as such. (too bad I can't post a picture of it here, it's cute). Combat vets were referred to as possible terrorists, and I forgot who used the A__hole term. Anyway all terms on my badge were actual quotes.
The Black community is outraged at all the "white people."
BUT....

(And, yes, they have read Atlas Shrugged.)
But, they do not see the contradictions? It sounds as if they are well educated, but not wise.. they lack critical thinking skills? A hard drive on a computer contains a wealth of information, but with a faulty CPU only nonsense can come of it...
Regards,

I am not of the opinion that their 'wisdom' is lacking, but perhaps that their 'reality' is missing. These are all people who have been raised in an affluent urban environment.
They really mean that the poor should be supported and that the EPA is right about everything - and they are willing to give their own efforts and money to endorse this. (But they are also willing to vote to take my money for those purposes too.) These people really mean it.

I think that my philosophy will stand the test of time and travail much better than theirs will, though, so perhaps some day they will modify their world view.

comfort let themselves stray from the rigor which
got them there, taking $$-comfort for granted.
when they look around, they think compassionately
and feel generous towards those who haven't "been
so lucky" (forgetting the rigor) and, sloppily, think
that others should do the same. . then, they slur
their logic and forget that government is force ...
so, others should (be required to) do the same.
that is, the comfort-enjoyers get lazy. . it's a part
of the elitist self-righteousness which they never
acknowledge, but always enjoy.
it's a slippery slope . . . and the reason that my
mom's and dad's votes cancelled one another,
almost all the time. -- j
factor . . . everyone must succumb to my charm! -- j
We don't have those problems here because it wouldn't get very far... the looters & thugs definitely are not interested in attempting that in a populace that can certainly fight back with much, much more firepower.
They (the left) did this to themselves.
I really believe the law needs to be changed to let property owners defend what is theirs with deadly force. Property is that important.
I once heard a (possible urban myth) about a cop telling a homeowner who had a dead perp on his front porch, with a nod and a wink: "Drag him back in the house before anyone else gets here"...
changed to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,"
there was a significant change in the future. -- j
I have not known. . civics teacher gave me that.

Has anyone felt that these riots seems to have increase somewhat since we hired this president, or is it just that the media reports more of it?
riots because they see them as justified, and Fox
makes a big deal out of them because the see them
as unjustified. . big deals all around. -- j
Wilson as having been given a generous future. -- j

Here's the reality, the business owners are going to collect insurance, the insurance companies will seek recompense from the city (and rightfully so), and those businesses will NEVER rebuild.
Small wonder things like this go on.
There is no such thing as an African American. Or a Chinese American. Or a Caucasian. We're all just Americans. End of Story. As soon as people stop referring to themselves by their skin color, ethnic heritage (or lack of it), etc. the better off this nation will be.
