When does the word "racist" become meaningless. There are still minorities in this country that suffer true racism. To over use the word and to use it in such a ridiculous way just makes more and more people tune it out when they hear it. Some black leaders on the left should denounce this stupidity.

We are watching the degeneration of a word, richrobinson. "Damned" used to mean that your soul was going to Hell; it was a dire word to use. Now it means you stubbed your toe.

We will see the day when "racist" becomes a mild explicative, unfettered from its origin. We will hear talk of someones 'racist car' that broke down on the way to work or a 'racist strawberry' that was mushy, down at the bottom of the basket.

Perhaps, instead of resisting this degeneration, we should apply our verbal jujitsu in the direction of the momentum and help it along.

Jan, has a racist pile of twigs to dispose of this morning

It's worse than that. In SJW newspeak, "racist" means you judge people by the content of their character. A "non-racist" regards being white as a "privilege," for which he owes something to every black person, all of whom are "victims" even though none of them have actually suffered discrimination in 50 years.

I sure wish MLK were still around. He would have declared victory long ago. Maybe that's why they killed him.

I think it became meaningless to thinking, i.e., rational people awhile ago, and now it's becoming so for even those people who don't think quite so deeply.

I'm sure there have been other formerly "hostile" words that have similarly lost their "automatic" negative connotations in recent times, from overuse or use in ridiculous, clearly inapplicable, situations.

But they escape me at the moment. Anyone else?

As far as "black leaders" denouncing the trend, leave out the qualifier "on the left", and I think some have...

All white males are racists, however, if you are a black progressive, a white extreme progressive, or a primitive tribe member, you cannot be a racist. Asians are suspect and need to be scrupulously inspected. You see, Hitler was right, but, he just had the wrong group to set up as "pure." Any member of a minority (soon to become a majority) or follower of Bill Ayers, Cloward, Piven, and descendants of the Weather Underground is also immune to the racist disease.

And it's been awhile since I've heard the "argument" but within the past few years someone put out there that "blacks cannot be racist", period. Ah, it's coming back to me now: in order to be racist, you have to have power and be part of the power elite, and since, by definition, blacks have no power, ergo, that can't be racist. So even if you're black and use what some of us more common folk might consider "racial epithets", you're still not a racist. Or, if you're black and repeatedly use the "N" word in a rap "song", and also refer to black women as "ho's"...nope, still not racist.

Logically, then, I guess those poor, powerless white folk in the hoods burning crosses (and churches) down South couldn't be racists either?

Oh, wait, did I use the racist term "logic".? Sorry...

Racism as used by politicians/media/hucksters (wait those have almost become synonyms, or at the least redundant) has become overused to the point of being meaningless.

Locking car doors near anyone who is black is now racism according to the ONE.

    Soo....

my wife's Rogue is racist because the doors auto lock.

my FJ cruiser is not racist because the doors do not auto lock.

With door locking as the threshold for racism, nearly any car of recent manufacture is racist.

They conflate ethicity, religion and racism....disliking hispanics, or jews or muslims is now ... you guessed it....racism.

Vocabulary and definitions are apparently subjects that along with civics, are overlooked in the liberal education system.

While I agree with most of the article and the opposition to Common Core, the article's title is misleading and overstated. Perhaps the same overstatement comes from the media lashing out at Libertarians, but I don't endorse the practice.

Arne just pointed out that past standardized testing was biased to English speaking students (and perhaps against mentally handicapped? What?). He stops well short of calling this racism.

On the other side, I wonder if it is a problem at all. So what if kids that speak Spanish score lower? Kids who speak Hindi and Chinese don't seem to have the same issue. How about instead of Common Core we spend 10% of the funds on optional after school catchup classes, and leave the tests alone? This might also save
money in rebroadcasting the same shows in Spanish.

If I didn't have to hear "to continue in Spanish", in Spanish every time I call for phone support from a computer before I die, I'll be satisfied.

Here in southern Florida, most stores and offices (and phone messages) have both English and Spanish, and some even add Creole. Official documents have all three. Some places have dispensed with English altogether. This is the natural process of evolution. The government can mandate that schools must teach in English only, but it can't force people to actually speak only English.

Legislating that all children must master the same scholastic program is a last-ditch effort to homogenize the population and make the herd easier to control. What we're really seeing is a battle of memes.

The marvel is that kids already have a common core of knowledge and culture through the Internet and their music and entertainments. Just look at how values can be changed by making brainiacs heroes, like NUMB3RS and Big Bang Theory, where math and geeks are cool. It's kids who are the self-taught computer experts anymore. Kids can figure things out for themselves, like the Hole-in-the-Wall project, http://www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_sh... and many excellent on-line learning programs. It's the government's test authors who are the real racists.

Spot on puzzle lady. The only thing that I could add would be if parents would wwakeup and became more involved and not expect the schools to educate their children but be the example to their child's learning process.

Ah, dude, if only! How to "wake people up" when they have been habituated for generations to letting the bureaucracy dictate to them to stay out of the way, when they have no frame of reference of how to be a positive example. If only we could just snap our fingers and everyone would be instantly rational.

Evolution is a long, incremental process, and each individual's mental framework is built one idea at a time. How to beat back the dominant bad ideas that have hold of them now? How to prove that our propaganda is better than theirs? Even the best-intentioned parents don't have the "intellectual ammunition" with which to guide their children, let alone choose their politicians.

This all reminds me of reading Plato the Republic where they talk about how parents are not equipped to raise and educate and the state should take the children at birth and put in a nursery to be raised by the state. Look how close we are to that now. The more I've read about Plato and Kant the more their philosophy scares the daylights out of me with the road we are on now.

Well said, waytodude. That's also why more and more families opt for homeschooling, and those kids that I've met are remarkable. The only drawback there is when the homeschooling is religiously motivated and promotes intelligent design and denies evolution.

I wish we had the luxury of homeschooling our little girl. I do have some advantage in that we live in a very rural setting with my work on the farm I'm able to be home when she gets home and De - program the liberal agenda that are being pushed. I'm having so much trouble trying to keep her ahead while the system keeps trying to hold her back because it don't fit the norm. Funny how special class for the kids behind but nothing for advanced students in a rural school then hear on the news about urban advance kid get get special classes because their skin is a different color and only one parent in a high risk neighborhood. Still I plug along glad I'm where I am in life.

If we wish to improve the educational system it is a no brainer. Shut down the Fed Dept. of Education and turn education of our children back to the local Gov'ts and parents. Teach, reading, writing, math, science, rather than indoctrinate. Test to appraise what has been learned. Keep teachers who are teaching and remove those with an ideology.

The article says, "Duncan maintained the Obama Administration’s position that standardized tests are crucial for both tracking students’ progress and keeping tabs on the achievement gaps between certain groups." Having that information might be useful for some purposes not hard to imagine, but there is no reason it should trump parental judgment or local school policy. This should be an issue around which responsible parents, Objectivists (with or without children), and libertarians of any flavor should draw a line in the sand.

Good try Arne. But it doesn't fly.

It reminds me of that recent cartoon saying the Walking Dead Zombies descended on DC to suck on peoples brains and........starved to death.

I think the whole idea of Common Core is flawed from the start. People should be allowed to learn at their own speed and what they want to learn when they want to learn it. It should be a decision the the child and to some extent the parent make. Government Indoctrination Centers (public schools) do a terrible job of "teaching" because they are trying to force feed "their view of education" on the students. I, for one, was bored to death in high school and only went because I had to go. Compared with what I have learned on my own, it was a complete waste of time.

Yes, and it makes my day when yet another State drops it. My guess is the original idea came from Bill Ayers, after an approving screening of "The Killing Fields"...

Another poster recently viewed it as part of or at least inspired by "UN Agenda 21"...ah, but that's silly conspiracy thinking (not to mention "racist" to the core [sorry ;-( ])...

When the federal government's Dept. of Education has actually driven the smarts of our youth in the wrong direction, would you not expect some intelligent individuals to stand against it? I guess I must just be a racist. Bill Gates should try Common Core on his children before funding it and so they (the government) can shove it down our throats. Bill is white isn't he? Then how can I be a racist?

In all actuality, I see that Common Core (and the DOE) are there to insure we have education disparity between the races, the classes, and that some of them remain exactly where they are. How else could we justify having a such a big government to control things if everybody was equal? Could we justify having a big government if everyone had the same smarts? Would we need a department of the government to hold students back if too many of them got too smart?

Well. I''m never 100% sure when it comes to politics, but I think States can and have opted out of Common Core through their State legislatures. I think quite a few. Too busy to Google at the moment.

As this I'm even a little more more sure of: the "stick" against the States used to be you'd lose your precious and significant "Federal Funds" for your schools if your State opted out of Common Core, but I think the new Republican majority is trying to change that. Whether they cam, I don't know. (Maybe if they attach it to a bill giving Putin all of our uranium...)...

Seems to me that Secretary Duncan has graduated from his own Common Core program and his indoctrination has been complete. It is ultimately the parents' obligation to see to it their children are educated, with our without the Common Core.

That's a new one. Racist? Why? Because the proponent of the policy these parents are opting out of, happen to be black? Or does he now admit that Common Core is about teaching white people to want to darken their skin in solidarity?

As a former Detroiter who returns there a lot and still has family there, I can tell you for sure that there are such things as "charter schools" in Michigan, which are organized by private organizations but are funded with public school funds. They don't get "everything", like buses, school lunches...but they get enough to compete, and they are quite successful. To the point of "racism", there are many of these school within Detroit itself (my sister teaches in one) started by black parents and organizations, and they are doing quite well in terms of drop-out rates, students going on to college, etc., in particular vs. the Detroit Public School system. And no, most people I've talked to associated with those schools, including my sister, staunchly oppose Common Core.

It would be interesting to make a list of all the reasons the left has accused the right of racism. It should be a rather extensive list like the reasons for what causes global warming (see link below). It will likely turn out that any disagreement with the left has a racist component, at least according to them. Why do they do it? Because it works. Until we start ridiculing them every time they pull the race card, they will use it forever as history has shown.
