The “greatest generation” earned Tom Brokaw’s epitaph because it survived the consequences of its own inability and unwillingness to see through statist lies. If survival is the sine qua non of greatness, then foreign generations who survived Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, and Mao must have attained the summit. They survived far more deprivation, misery, and horror, and unlike in America, faced the concentration camp or gas chamber if they protested. The greatest American generation is the one that revolted against the British and gave us the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Second place goes to the one that ended slavery, rebuilt the country after the Civil War, and powered the Industrial Revolution. The ultimate ranking of the generation that turned its back on our heritage of liberty and chose something-for-nothing government is not yet known―we’re still paying the tab―but it will be closer to the bottom than the top.
