Essential Liberty: A Terrifying Tale

I picked up the book Essential Liberty because it kept showing up on Amazon as a book people who read our book Pendulum of Justice had also purchased. Both books portray government run amok. Essential Liberty presents a realistic scenario of what might happen if gun control advocates have their way and all guns are confiscated from private citizens. The book is fast paced, easy to read, and the characters are well developed and interesting. The book is well edited and formatted. The story presents how the gun control policy of confiscation would destroy the lives of honest and good people. It also shows the terrifying result of only the government having the means of self defense, as well as the outrageous militarization of our police forces. This policy and attitude has resulted in the police showing almost no judgment as to the cost and benefits of their actions. They demand compliance not logic and reason. For instance, see this article http://reason.com/archives/2011/01/17/ju....

I was happy to see that the book made the point that all rights had to be protected, not just the right to bear arms. Despite making this point, the book never talks about Natural Rights, never talks about the characters’ 4th amendment right being violated. He briefly mentions that the ‘Collection’ process includes just compensation, but other than this really never talks about how people’ 5th amendment rights are being violated or their 8th amendment rights. Ultimately, the book suggests that the fault is a couple of rogue people within the government and “society.” The book’s attempt to justify torture also flies in the face of Natural Rights using the ‘greater good’ argument, which shows that the book is not based on the Natural Rights of individuals - the basis of the Declaration of Independence and our common law. I hope that the author’s next book is grounded in Natural Rights, which is the basis of freedom.

This sounds interesting, not like a gun nut scenario. I strongly agree with the things you summarize.

Hmmm, looks interesting. I'm still in the middle of PoJ right now, though I might look into this other book when I'm done. Thanks for sharing! ^_^
