Well, there was a chapter of Atlas Shrugged that was literally titled, "The Utopia of Greed," so I don't think it would be reasonable to conclude that Ayn Rand correctly acknowledged greed as a legitimate problem like an ethical capitalist should have, but I do agree with you that corruption in the name of profit is a genuine concern. Unfortunately, I don't know if there's anything that can be done about it. Socialism, which was supposed to solve those kinds of problems in theory, ended up actually making them even worse in practice. So I don't know what the solution is, if there even is one... :(
This film raises the question which is at least implicit in any issue involving "The State": "who owns your life?" If you do, then it is none of "The State's" business what you put into your body or what sort of medical care you prefer. If you do not....I guess most of those here can finish the sentence.
Has anyone looked into the background of the story this film is allegedly "based on"? Unfortunately, "based on a true story" is a wildly abused phrase in Hollywood. I am reminded of the somewhat similar film "Lorenzo's Oil", which dealt with a somewhat similar situation. A good film, and reasonably accurate, but the details of the actual case are very different from the movie.
Medical movies run the gamut as far as accuracy is concerned. The worst example I know of is "Awakenings", where the only items the film presented accurately were the name of the disease and the name of the drug.
Totally looks like an awesome movie. And best of all, it promotes libertarian free market ideals and LGBT rights at the same time! That's win-win in my book. :D
Actually the corrupt bias of the FDA & CDC for financial gain is nothing new. Check out the life and times of a fellow named Royal Raymond Rife and what the AMA did to him and his discoveries back in the 1930's. This is just one of many links. http://www.naturalnews.com/027104_cancer... Corruption in the name of profit will always abound. There are many case through out history where corrupt people do many things and use greed and fear as their basis. I am all for profit, but make it an honest and ethical profit. The ethical person is not driven by fear or greed and readily recognizes its ugly face. That was what Ayn was all about in the person of John Galt.
I think it is hard for some people to believe that profits trump health but this is a billion dollar industry. Some people will do anything to secure their piece of it.
Without getting into it too much (I can't) I have experienced how the medical system views the average person/family in America. It's bad. Very bad. I am a capitalist, without a doubt. But, I've seen people harmed on purpose for profit, with zero recourse. The FDA and CDC are just special interest groups and nothing more.
"You can rest assured that in times like these when their fat little comforts are threatened you can be sure that science is the first thing men will abandon." (I'm typing that quote from Atlas Shrugged on memory. I hope I nailed it.)

Apparently the movie is roughly about 70% fact, 30% fiction.
In your opinion, is there anything that can be done to change that?

Like I said - I've seen things I can't really get into. "Health" of the average American doesn't even make the list of priorities, period.
